Abstract

The present invention provides systems and methods for logically organizing data for storage and recovery on a data storage medium using a multi-level format. The present invention also provides systems and methods for protecting data stored on data storage medium so that the data may be recovered without errors.

         70 : An apparatus comprising:
 a holographic data storage medium; and   data pages stored on the holographic data storage medium, wherein each data page comprises a unit of data written to the holographic data storage medium, and wherein the data pages are organized as chapters on the holographic data storage medium, each chapter comprising contiguous data pages.   
     
     
         71 : The apparatus of  claim 70 , wherein the data pages are organized as books. 
     
     
         72 : The apparatus of  claim 70 , wherein one or more of the chapters extend across two or more books. 
     
     
         73 : The apparatus of  claim 70 , further comprising a card catalog structure for mapping between book locations of the books and chapter locations of the chapters and for mapping between book locations of the books and logical block addresses of data on the holographic data storage medium, wherein the card catalog is stored on the holographic data storage medium. 
     
     
         74 : The apparatus of  claim 70 , wherein the data pages further comprise page headers for allowing a drive to determine chapter size and location of one or more of the chapters. 
     
     
         75 : The apparatus of  claim 70 , wherein the apparatus is a type of data storage device and wherein the apparatus emulates a removable data storage device type that is different than the data storage device type of the apparatus. 
     
     
         76 : The apparatus of  claim 70  wherein each chapter includes a chapter directory for defining the mapping of logical blocks within and across chapter boundaries. 
     
     
         77 : A method for storing data comprising the following steps:
 (a) mapping logical blocks of data into chapters; and   (b) storing the data as data pages on a holographic data storage medium, wherein step (a) is performed prior to step (b).   
     
     
         78 : An apparatus comprising:
 a holographic data storage medium; and   data stored as data pages on the holographic storage medium, wherein the data are stored in a plurality of partitions on the holographic data storage medium, and wherein the data stored in two or more of the partitions have different density levels and/or data types.

 a holographic data storage medium; and   data stored as data pages on the holographic storage medium, wherein the data is stored In a plurality of partitions on the holographic data storage medium, and wherein two or more of the partitions have data that is written in different recording modes.

 a holographic data storage medium; and   data stored as data pages on the holographic data storage medium, wherein the data is stored on the holographic data storage medium in a format generation data structure and wherein each format generation of the format generation data structure includes:   reading rules for reading data from a data from the holographic data storage medium;   writing rules for writing data to the holographic data storage medium; organizing rules for organizing the data stored on the holographic data storage medium; and locating rules for locating the data on the holographic data storage medium; and   wherein the reading rules, writing rules, organizing rules and locating rules are format generation dependent.
