Compositions and methods for treating sleep disorders

Abstract

The present invention provides liquid dosage forms for treating narcolepsy. The liquid dosage form includes zolpidem or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, a carbonate salt, a metal oxide, and a borate salt. The present invention also provides methods for treating somnambulism. The methods include administering an emulsion that includes zolpidem, a bicarbonate salt, a citrate salt, and a phosphate salt.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A liquid dosage form for treatment of narcolepsy, said liquid dosage form comprising:
 zolpidem or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof;   a carbonate salt;   a metal oxide; and   a borate salt.   
     
     
         2 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the carbonate salt is sodium carbonate. 
     
     
         3 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the carbonate salt is potassium carbonate. 
     
     
         4 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the carbonate salt is calcium carbonate. 
     
     
         5 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the carbonate salt is ammonium carbonate. 
     
     
         6 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the carbonate salt is magnesium carbonate. 
     
     
         7 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the zolpidem or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is zolpidem hemitartrate. 
     
     
         8 . The liquid dosage form of  claim 1 , wherein the zolpidem or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is selected from the group consisting of zolpidem succinate, zolpidem dihydrochloride, zolpidem salicylate, zolpidem hemisuccinate, zolpidem citrate, zolpidem maleate, zolpidem hydrochloride, zolpidem carbamate, zolpidem sulfate, zolpidem nitrate, zolpidem benzoate, and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         9 . A method for treating somnambulism in a subject in need thereof, comprising the steps of:
 administering an emulsion comprising zolpidem, a bicarbonate salt, a citrate salt, and a phosphate salt to the subject.   
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the bicarbonate salt is sodium bicarbonate. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the bicarbonate salt is potassium bicarbonate. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the bicarbonate salt is calcium bicarbonate. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the bicarbonate salt is ammonium bicarbonate. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the bicarbonate salt is magnesium bicarbonate. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the zolpidem or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is zolpidem hemitartrate. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 9 , wherein the zolpidem or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is selected from the group consisting of zolpidem succinate, zolpidem dihydrochloride, zolpidem salicylate, zolpidem hemisuccinate, zolpidem citrate, zolpidem maleate, zolpidem hydrochloride, zolpidem carbamate, zolpidem sulfate, zolpidem nitrate, zolpidem benzoate, and combinations thereof.
