Abstract

A gasoline deposit control additive composition for use in a fuel comprising from about 70 to about 95 volume percent of hydrocarbons in the gasoline boiling range and from about 5 to about 30 volume percent of at least one alcohol, comprising the imine or tertiary amine product of the reaction between (a) at least one aldehyde or ketone or mixture thereof having the formula R 16 CHO, R 16 CH 2 CHO, R 17 (C=0)R 18 or R 17 CH 2 (C=0)R 18 , wherein R 16 , R 17 , and R 18 are the same or different and are each independently a straight or branched chain hydrocarbyl or aryl group that contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and (b) a primary or secondary amine functionality.

That which is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A deposit control additive for use in a liquid automotive fuel comprising from about 70 to about 95 volume percent of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range and from about 5 to about 30 volume percent of at least one alcohol, comprising: an imine or tertiary amine product of the reaction between
 (a) at least one aldehyde or ketone or mixture thereof having the formula R 16 CHO, R 16 CH 2 CHO, R 17 (C═O)R 18  or R 17 CH 2 (C═O)R 18 , wherein R 16 , R 17  and R 18  are the same or different and are each independently a straight or branched chain hydrocarbyl or aryl group that contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, with   (b) a primary or secondary amine functionality in at least one nitrogen-containing compound selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbyl amines, hydrocarbyl-substituted poly (oxyalkylene) amines, hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimides, Mannich reaction products, polyalkylphenoxyaminoalkanes, nitro and amino aromatic esters of polyalkylphenoxyalkanols, and a carburetor/injector detergent additive having a molecular weight in the range of from 100 to 600 and having a non-polar moiety and a nitrogen-containing polar moiety, and mixtures thereof.   
     
     
         2 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  wherein R 16  of the aldehyde and R 17  and R 18  of the ketone are the same or different and each independently contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms. 
     
     
         3 . The deposit control additive of  claim 2  wherein R 16 , R 17  and R 18  are the same or different and each independently contains from 1 to 12 atoms. 
     
     
         4 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  wherein the liquid automotive fuel comprises about 2 to about 30 volume percent of the at least one alcohol. 
     
     
         5 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  wherein the at least one alcohol comprises ethanol or a butanol or both. 
     
     
         6 . The deposit control additive of  claim 5  wherein the at least one alcohol comprises a butanol isomer. 
     
     
         7 . The deposit control additive of  claim 6  wherein the at least one alcohol comprises isobutanol. 
     
     
         8 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  comprising the imine or tertiary amine product of the reaction between an aforesaid aldehyde or ketone and a primary amine functionality in an aforesaid nitrogen-containing compound. 
     
     
         9 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  comprising the imine or tertiary amine product of the reaction between an aforesaid aldehyde or ketone and a secondary amine functionality in an aforesaid nitrogen-containing compound. 
     
     
         10 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  comprising at least one reaction product of the aforesaid at least one aldehyde or ketone with a primary or secondary amine functionality of at least one aforesaid nitrogen-containing compound, the at least one reaction product comprises at least one of: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein R a  is a N-alkyl or N-polyamine moiety attached to a nitrogen atom in an aforesaid primary amine functionality, and the alkyl group therein contains from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and the polyamine group contains from 2 to 12 nitrogen atoms and 2 to 40 carbon atoms; and R b1  and R b2  are the same or different and are each independently an N,N-dialkyl or N-polyamine attached to a nitrogen atom in an aforesaid secondary amine functionality, and each alkyl group therein contains from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and the polyamine group contains from 2 to 12 nitrogen atoms and from 2 to 40 carbon atoms. 
       
     
     
         11 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  wherein the primary or secondary amine functionality has the formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein: R 1  is a polyalkyl group having an average molecular weight in the range of about 600 to 5,000; R 2  and R 3  are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and A is amino, N-alkyl amino having about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, N,N-dialkyl amino having about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, or a polyamine moiety having about 2 to about 12 amine nitrogen atoms and about 2 to about 40 carbon atoms. 
       
     
     
         12 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  wherein the primary or secondary amine functionality has the formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein: R 13  is a hydrocarbyl group having from about 1 to about 30 carbon atoms; R 14  and R 15  are each independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms and each R 14  and R 15  is independently selected in each —O—CHR 14 —CHR 15 — unit; B is amino, N-alkyl amino having about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, N,N-dialkyl amino having about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, or a polyamine moiety having about 2 to about 12 amine nitrogen atoms and about 2 to about 40 carbon atoms; and m is an integer from about 5 to about 100. 
       
     
     
         13 . The deposit control additive of  claim 1  wherein the primary or secondary amine functionality has the formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein: R 4  is nitro or —(CH 2 ) n —NR 9 R 10 , wherein R 9  and R 10  are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and n is 0 or 1; R 5  is hydrogen, hydroxy, nitro or —NR 11 R 12 , wherein R 11  and R 12  are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 6  and R 7 , are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and R 8  is a polyalkyl group having an average molecular weight in the range of about 450 to 5,000. 
       
     
     
         14 . A liquid automotive fuel comprising from about 70 to about 95 volume percent of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range, from about 5 to about 30 volume percent of at least one alcohol and from about 50 to about 4000 parts per million by volume of the deposit control additive of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         15 . The liquid automotive fuel of  claim 14  wherein the deposit control additive is at a level of from about 100 to about 2000 parts per million by volume. 
     
     
         16 . The liquid automotive fuel of  claim 15  wherein the deposit control additive is at a level of from about 100 to about 1000 parts per million by volume.
