Abstract
A method, system and device for facilitating the retrieval of a marine anchor from an underwater obstruction, the device being configured to actuate when subjected to a force load of a predetermined peak force threshold to effect a change in the point of retrieval that an anchor rode makes with the anchor. The obstructed anchor may be retrieved from another direction, such as a direction opposite from which the anchor was set.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A device for facilitating retrieval of an anchor comprising:
a releasable connecting mechanism that has at least one releasable connector that secures a first connection, and a cable that is held with the releasable connector in an arrangement where movement of the cable in at least one direction actuates the releasable connector.
2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said releasable connector is configured to connect with an aperture of an anchor.
3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the releasable connector comprises a shearable member.
4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein the shearable member comprises a fastener.
5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the releasable connector comprises a release pin.
6 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the release pin has a threaded portion, and wherein a matingly threaded nut is provided to secure said releasable connector to an anchor structure.
7 . The device of claim 3 , wherein said shearable member will shear allowing the releasable first connection to release when the releasable connector is operated under a working load that exceeds a predetermined threshold peak working load.
8 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the release pin has annular grooves provided therein, and wherein the annular grooves are provided so that when the release pin is installed, the release pin will shear allowing the releasable first connection to release when the releasable connector is operated under a working load that exceeds a predetermined threshold peak working load.
9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said releasable connector comprises a release bar member having a first bore therethrough, and a securing mechanism for securing the release bar member to the cable.
10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein said securing mechanism comprises at least one threaded second bore and communicating with said first bore, and a set screw configured formatingly receipt within said second bore to tighten against the cable.
11 . The device of claim 10 , wherein a plurality of second bores are provided and wherein a plurality of set screws are provided.
12 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said cable has a first end and a second end and wherein said releasable connecting mechanism is carried on said cable between said cable first end and said cable second end.
13 . The device of claim 10 , wherein said releasable connecting mechanism has a release pin, wherein a release pin bore is disposed in said release bar member, and wherein said release pin is installed through said release pin bore to secure said release bar member to an anchor.
14 . The device of claim 13 , including a connecting member that connects the anchor with the release bar member.
15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein said connecting member comprises a shackle having a first arm and a second arm, wherein said release pin has shear points and wherein the shear points of the release pin comprise annular grooves provided in the release pin, and wherein the annular grooves are provided so that when the release pin is installed in said release pin bore, the annular grooves are respectively located proximate to the shackle first arm and shackle second arm.
16 . A method of retrieving a marine anchor used to anchor a marine craft comprising:
a) providing an anchor having a crown end and a shank end having a shank eye; b) providing an anchor rode; c) providing a cable having a first end and a second end; d) connecting said cable first end to the crown end of the anchor; d) providing a release bar; e) securing the release bar at a location along the cable; f) providing a releasable fastener; g) connecting the release bar to the shank end of an anchor with said releasable fastener; h) connecting the second cable end to the anchor rode; i) lowering the anchor with the release bar and cable connected thereto; j) retrieving the anchor from an obstruction by:
i) securing the anchor rode to the marine craft;
ii) moving the marine craft in a direction to provide a pulling force from a direction different than a force previously applied to the anchor when in the obstructed position;
iii) releasing said connection between the release bar and the shank of the anchor by applying a force load that exceeds the peak force threshold of said releasable fastener; and
iv) hoisting the anchor by applying a pulling force to retrieve the anchor from the anchor crown end.
17 . A device for facilitating the retrieval of an anchor from an underwater obstruction comprising:
a connector that, when subjected to a force load of a predetermined peak force threshold, actuates to change the point of retrieval that an anchor rode makes with the anchor; and a cable that passes through said connector, and wherein said connector is adjustably securable to said cable.
18 . An anchor having a releasable feature that includes the device of claim 17 .
19 . A kit providing an anchor and improved release mechanism, the kit comprising:
a) an anchor; b) the device of claim 1 .
20 . The kit of claim 19 , wherein said kit further comprises a plurality of shearable members having different force shearing thresholds, and wherein said releasable fastening means comprises a shearable member is selected from said plurality of shearable members.Cited by (0)
