Abstract

Methods for preparing a tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition are provided. Aspects of the methods include converting an initial tricalcium phosphate particulate composition to hydroxyapatite, sintering the resultant hydroxyapatite to produce a second tricalcium phosphate composition and then mechanically manipulating the second tricalcium phosphate composition to produce a tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition. The subject methods and compositions produced thereby find use in a variety of applications.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method of making a tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition, said method comprising:
 (a) converting an initial tricalcium phosphate particulate composition to hydroxyapatite; (b) sintering said hydroxyapatite to produce a second tricalcium phosphate composition; and (c) mechanically manipulating said second tricalcium phosphate composition to produce a tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition.

         2 - 12 . (canceled)

13 . A tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition produced according to the method comprising:
 (a) converting an initial tricalcium phosphate particulate composition to hydroxyapatite; (b) sintering said hydroxyapatite to produce a second tricalcium phosphate composition; and (c) mechanically manipulating said second tricalcium phosphate composition to produce a tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition.

         14 . (canceled)

15 . A method of producing a flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product, said method comprising:
combining: (a) a setting fluid; and (b) a dry reactant component comprising a tricalcium phosphate coarse particle composition comprising tricalcium phosphate particles ranging in size from 38 to 212 μm; in a ratio sufficient to produce said flowable material.

16 . The method according to claim 15 , wherein said dry reactant component comprises a fine calcium phosphate particulate composition having a mean particle size of less than 8 μm and narrow particle size distribution.

17 . The method according to claim 16 , wherein the ratio of said fine to coarse compositions in said dry reactant component ranges from 1 to 10.

18 . The method according to claim 15 , wherein at least one of said setting fluid and dry reactants comprises a cyclodextrin.

19 . A flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product, wherein said composition is produced by the method according to claim 15 .

20 . The composition according to claim 19 , wherein said composition comprises a cyclodextrin.

21 . A method of repairing a hard tissue defect, said method comprising:
applying to the site of said defect a flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product, wherein said composition is produced by the method according to claim 15 .

         22 - 24 . (canceled)
