Abstract

Beneficial and synergistic effects for alleviating joint pain and symptoms of osteoarthritis and/or rheumatoid arthritis have been found with krill oil and/or marine oil in combination with other active constituents, including astaxanthin and polymeric hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronan) in an oral dosage form.

         35 . A method to treat and alleviate symptoms of joint pain associated with osteoarthritis, comprising administering a therapeutic amount of an astaxanthin oleoresin. 
     
     
         36 . The method according to  claim 35 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin is administered alone in an oral dosage form. 
     
     
         37 . The method according to  claim 35 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin is derived from  Haematococcus pluvialis  algae. 
     
     
         38 . The method according to  claim 35 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin includes at least 4 percent total astaxanthin. 
     
     
         39 . The method according to  claim 35 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin includes at least 5 percent total carotenoids. 
     
     
         40 . The method according to  claim 35 , comprising delivering 1 to 50 mg of astaxanthin oleoresin per daily dose. 
     
     
         41 . The method according to  claim 40 , comprising delivering 2 to 20 mg of astaxanthin oleoresin per daily dose. 
     
     
         42 . The method according to  claim 35 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin is obtained from a cracked biomass.

         44 . The method according to  claim 43 , wherein cracked biomass is solvent extracted by polar solvents or non-polar solvents. 
     
     
         45 . The method according to  claim 35 , wherein the astaxanthin is derived by synthetic routes in the free diol, monester or diester form. 
     
     
         46 . A composition formulated in a therapeutic amount to treat and alleviate symptoms of joint pain associated with osteoarthritis, wherein the composition includes an astaxanthin oleoresin. 
     
     
         47 . The composition according to  claim 46 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin is administered alone in an oral dosage form. 
     
     
         48 . The composition according to  claim 46 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin is derived from  Haematococcus pluvialis  algae. 
     
     
         49 . The composition according to  claim 46 , wherein the astaxanthin oleoresin includes at least 4 percent total astaxanthin.
