Mimicking the Metabolic Effects of Caloric Restriction by Administration of Glucose Anti-Metabolites

Abstract

Methods of maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in the quality of life of a mammal comprising the step of administering to the mammal a composition comprising an effective amount of mannoheptulose wherein the effective amount of mannoheptulose provides a dosage to the mammal on a daily basis from about 0.001 gram per kilogram of body weight of the mammal to about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight of the mammal.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in the quality of life of a mammal, said method comprising the step of administering to said mammal a composition comprising an effective amount of mannoheptulose wherein said effective amount of mannoheptulose provides a dosage to said mammal on a daily basis from about 0.001 gram per kilogram of body weight of said mammal to about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight of said mammal, wherein said maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in the quality of life of said mammal is selected from the group consisting of maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in whole body composition, maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in functional mobility, and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         2 . A method of maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in whole body composition in a mammal, the method comprising the step of administering to said mammal a composition comprising an effective amount of mannoheptulose wherein said effective amount of mannoheptulose provides a dosage to said mammal from about 0.001 gram per kilogram of body weight of said mammal to about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight of said mammal per day. 
     
     
         3 . A method of maintaining and/or attenuating a decline in musculoskeletal health in a mammal, said method comprising the step of administering to said mammal a composition comprising an effective amount of mannoheptulose wherein said effective amount of mannoheptulose provides a dosage to said mammal from about 0.001 gram per kilogram of body weight of said mammal to about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight of said mammal per day.
