Abstract

Systems and methods for uploading documents to a document database by using an efficient drag and drop interface is provided. The drag and drop interface may include a persistent and movable drop box rendered on an operating system. The drop box may be preconfigured to interface with or access a document database to upload one or more documents. Furthermore, the drop box may be persistently available on a desktop of the operating system. For example, the drop box may be visible and accessible through any other interface, such as a web browser or email client, that may be rendered in the same pixel locations as the drop box. Accordingly, one or more objects may be dragged and dropped for upload to the document database from any other interface or from the desktop. Once the one or more objects have been dragged and dropped over the persistent doe drop element 108 , the one or more documents corresponding to the one or more objects may be uploaded to the database based at least in part on preconfigured destination locations at which to upload.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A system, comprising:
 a memory to store instructions; and   a processor, coupled to the memory, that facilitates execution of the instructions to perform operations, comprising:   receiving a document associated with a document type, wherein the document is received via a visually persistent desktop element displayed on a remote device; and   storing the document to a destination location determined as a function of the document type, a document description, and administrative information.   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the visually persistent desktop element overlays an application interface generated by an application executing on the remote device, and the application interface is displayed on a display device associated with the remote device. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the receiving of the document is initiated by an occurrence of an event associated with the visually persistent desktop element on the remote device. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 3 , wherein the visually persistent desktop element identifies a source storage location of the document based on the occurrence of the event. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 3 , wherein the event is a drag of a depiction of the document from an application executing on the remote device and a drop of the depiction of the document to a location proximate to the visually persistent desktop element. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 5 , wherein the application executing on the remote device is an email application. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the visually persistent desktop element is a pictogram displayed on a display device associated with the remote device. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the visually persistent desktop element is moveable about a display plane projected on the display device. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the visually persistent desktop element is translucent to allow an active application executing on the remote device to be visible below the visually persistent desktop element. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 8 , wherein a degree of translucency associated with the visually persistent desktop element is a configurable parameter. 
     
     
         11 . A method, comprising:
 obtaining, by a system that includes a processor, a document via a persistent desktop element displayed on an external device; and   storing the document to destination location determined as a function a document type, a document description, and administrative information, wherein the document type and the document description are associated with the document and are received by the system via the persistent desktop element.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the persistent desktop element overlays a displayed application interface generated by an application executing on the external device. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the persistent desktop element is an icon displayed on an interface device associated with the external device. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the persistent desktop element is semi-transparent to permit a graphical interface associated with an application executing on the mobile device to be visible. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein the application retrieves, presents, or traverses an information resource from interlinked hypertext documents accessed via a global system of interconnected computer networks. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein a degree of semi-transparency of the persistent desktop element is a parameter configurable by the external device. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the obtaining of the document by the system is facilitated by an event that occurs on the external device. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , wherein the event is a drag of a representation of the document from an application executing on the external device and a drop of the representation of the document to a location proximate to a display of the persistent desktop element on an interface device associated with the external device. 
     
     
         19 . A computer-readable storage device having computer instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution, cause a system having a processor to perform operations, comprising:
 receiving a document type associated with a document via a persistently displayed pictogram, wherein the document type identifies the document;   retrieving the document from a device as a function of the document type; and   storing the document to a local destination location based on administrative information and the document type.   
     
     
         20 . The computer-readable storage device of  claim 19 , wherein an event occurrence related to the persistently displayed pictogram initiates the receiving the document type and facilitates retrieving the document from the device.
