Abstract

Methods and devices and systems including a communication module operatively coupled to a data collection module for communicating the stored analyte related data after the analyte related data is stored in the data collection module over a predetermined time period, and a user interface unit configured to communicate with the communication module to receive from the communication module the stored analyte related data in the data collection module over the predetermined time period, and to output information associated with the monitored analyte level, where the user interface unit is configured to operate in a prospective analysis mode including substantially real time output of information associated with the monitored analyte level, or a retrospective analysis mode including limited output of information during the predetermined time period wherein no information related to the monitored analyte level is output during the predetermined time period, are provided.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An analyte monitoring system, comprising:
 an analyte sensor in fluid contact with interstitial fluid to generate signals associated with a monitored analyte level over a monitoring time period;   a data collection module operatively coupled to the analyte sensor and configured to store analyte related data based on the generated signals associated with the monitored analyte level over the monitoring time period;   a communication module operatively coupled to the data collection module for communicating the stored analyte related data after the analyte related data is stored in the data collection module over a predetermined time period; and   a user interface unit configured to communicate with the communication module to receive from the communication module the stored analyte related data in the data collection module over the predetermined time period, and to output information associated with the monitored analyte level;
 wherein the user interface unit is configured to operate in one of a prospective analysis mode including substantially real time output of information associated with the monitored analyte level, or a retrospective analysis mode including limited output of information during the predetermined time period wherein no information related to the monitored analyte level is output during the predetermined time period. 
   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the communication module is configured to communicate with the user interface unit using one or more of a radio frequency (RF) communication protocol, an infrared communication protocol, a Bluetooth communication protocol, or an 802.11x communication protocol. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the limited output of information during the retrospective analysis mode includes output of one or more of data collection module operational status information, analyte sensor status information, a time of day information, a user profile information, or an elapsed duration of the predetermined time period. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the data collection module is configured to delete the stored analyte related data after communicating the analyte related data to the user interface unit. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein during the prospective analysis mode, the user interface unit is configured to visually output real time information related to the monitored analyte level. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the user interface unit is configured to receive one or more calibration information stored in the data collection module and associated with the analyte sensor from the communication module. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the calibration information includes sensor sensitivity information associated with the analyte sensor. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the user interface unit is configured to process the received analyte related data associated with the monitored analyte level during the predetermined time period based at least in part on the received calibration information. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the analyte sensor comprises a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein at least one of an analyte-responsive enzyme and a mediator are chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer. 
     
     
         11 . A method, comprising:
 generating signals associated with a monitored analyte level over a monitoring time period with an analyte sensor in fluid contact with interstitial fluid;   storing in a data collection module analyte related data based on the generated signals associated with the monitored analyte level over the monitoring time period;   communicating, with a communication module operatively coupled to the data collection module, the stored analyte related data;   receiving, from the communication module, the stored analyte related data in the data collection module over a predetermined time period; and   outputting at a user interface unit, information associated with the monitored analyte level based on the analyte related data received from the communication module, wherein outputting the information at the user interface unit includes operating the user interface unit in one of a prospective analysis mode including substantially real time output of information associated with the monitored analyte level, or a retrospective analysis mode including limited output of information during the predetermined time period wherein no information related to the monitored analyte level is output during the predetermined time period.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein communicating the stored analyte related data includes communicating with the user interface unit using one or more of a radio frequency (RF) communication protocol, an infrared communication protocol, a Bluetooth communication protocol, or an 802.11x communication protocol. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the limited output of information during the retrospective analysis mode includes output of one or more of data collection module operational status information, analyte sensor status information, a time of day information, a user profile information, or an elapsed duration of the predetermined time period. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 11 , further including deleting the stored analyte related data after communicating the analyte related data to the user interface unit. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein during the prospective analysis mode, the user interface unit is configured to visually output real time information related to the monitored analyte level. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 11 , further including receiving, at the user interface unit, one or more calibration information stored in the data collection module and associated with the analyte sensor. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the calibration information includes sensor sensitivity information associated with the analyte sensor. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 16 , further including processing the received analyte related data associated with the monitored analyte level during the predetermined time period based at least in part on the received calibration information. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the analyte sensor comprises a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein at least one of an analyte-responsive enzyme and a mediator are chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein at least one of the analyte-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer.
