Abstract

Various implementations relate to a system that provides a collection of deals to a mobile application on a client device. The mobile application then filters the deals based on relevance using a user profile within the client device, and displays the deals to a user. The display of the deals may be governed by the relevance of the respective deals as determined by matching of the deals with the user profile within the client device.

1 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing software comprising instructions executable by one or more computers which, upon such execution, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
 receiving, from a server at a client device, a collection of deals, wherein each deal comprises a value for each of a plurality of attributes;   generating, at the client device, a profile of a user, the profile representing the user's relative interest in each of the plurality of attributes;   receiving an input from the user identifying a geographic location and an associated future time period of interest to the user;   determining, at the client device without concurrent communication with the server, a relevance for each deal in the collection of deals, wherein the relevance for each deal is based on one or more metrics representing a distance between the values for the plurality of attributes of each deal and the profile;   selecting, at the client device, a set of deals from the collection of deals based on the determined relevance, the geographic location, and the associated future time period; and   outputting the selected set of deals to a display of the client device.   
     
     
         2 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein obtaining, at the client device, at least one geographic preference of the user comprises:
 outputting a map to the display of the client device;   receiving an input from the user identifying a region on the map, wherein the input comprises a gesture of the user.   
     
     
         3 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 2 , wherein the gesture of the user comprises the user dragging a digit or stylus around the region on the map. 
     
     
         4 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 2 , wherein the gesture of the user comprises the user tapping a digit or stylus on a point on the map to identify a selected region of the map having a first area, and then holding the digit or stylus on the point on the map such that the selected region of the map decreases in size to a second area, the second area being smaller than the first area. 
     
     
         5 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 2 , wherein the gesture of the user comprises the user tapping a digit or stylus on a point on the map to identify a selected region of the map having a first area, and then holding the digit or stylus on the point on the map such that the selected region of the map increases in size to a second area, the second area being larger than the first area.

         7 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein outputting the selected set of deals to a display of the client device comprises:
 rendering representations of the selected set of deals in a tile pattern on the display,   wherein a representation of a first deal from the selected set is rendered in a first tile having a first size, the first size being based on the relevance of the first deal,   wherein a representation of a second deal from the selected set is rendered in a second tile having a second size, the second size being based on the relevance of the second deal, and   wherein the relevance of the first deal is greater than the relevance of the second deal such that the first size of the first tile is larger than the second size of the second tile.   
     
     
         8 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein outputting the selected set of deals to a display of the client device comprises:
 rendering representations of the selected set of deals in a tile pattern on the display,   wherein a representation of a first deal from the selected set is rendered in a first tile at a first location in the tile pattern, the first location being based on the relevance of the first deal,   wherein a representation of a second deal from the selected set is rendered in a second tile at a second location in the tile pattern, the second location being based on the relevance of the second deal, and   wherein the relevance of the first deal is greater than the relevance of the second deal such that the first location of the first tile is above and/or to the left of the second location of the second tile.   
     
     
         9 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:
 rendering a representation of a first deal from the selected set in a first tile having a first size;   rendering a representation of a second deal from the selected set in a second tile having a second size;   receiving a command from the user to cause the display of the client device to zoom out;   responsive to determining that a relevance of the first deal is greater than a relevance of the second deal, decreasing the first size of the first tile and the second size of the second tile while increasing the first size of the first tile relative to the second size of the second tile.

         11 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more metrics representing the distance between the values for the plurality of attributes of each deal and the profile are determined by performing latent Dirichlet allocation. 
     
     
         12 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein obtaining, at the client device, a profile of a user comprises:
 determining that the user has purchased one or more deals, each of the purchased deals having a value for each of the plurality of attributes; and   calculating the profile based on the values for each of the purchased deals.   
     
     
         13 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein obtaining, at the client device, a profile of a user comprises:
 outputting one or more candidate deals to the display of the client device, each of the candidate deals having a value for each of the plurality of attributes;   receiving a selection from the user of one or more of the candidate deals; and   calculating the profile based on the values for each of the selected candidate deals.   
     
     
         14 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:
 receiving information that one or more of the deals in the collection of deals are sponsored deals;   wherein selecting a set of deals from the collection of deals based on the determined relevance comprises selecting the set of deals from the collection of deals based on the determined relevance and the information that one or more of the deals are sponsored deals.   
     
     
         15 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise replicating the profile to another client device of the user such that the replicated profile on the other client device is available for determining the relevance for each deal in the collection of deals at the other client device. 
     
     
         16 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise replicating geographic preferences of the user to another client device of the user. 
     
     
         17 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise
 determining, at the client device, a visual hierarchy for rendering the set of deals, wherein a rank in the visual hierarchy of a representation of each deal is based on the relevance of the respective deal; and   wherein outputting the selected set of deals to a display of the client device comprises rendering representations of the set of deals in a tile pattern on a display of the client device using the visual hierarchy.   
     
     
         18 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 17 , wherein a representation of a first deal from the set is rendered in a first tile having a first size, the first size being based on the relevance of the first deal,
 wherein a representation of a second deal from the set is rendered in a second tile having a second size, the second size being based on the relevance of the second deal, and   wherein the relevance of the first deal is greater than the relevance of the second deal such that the first size of the first tile is larger than the second size of the second tile.   
     
     
         19 . The computer-readable medium of  claim 17 , wherein the operations further comprise:
 receiving a command from a user to cause the display of the client device to zoom out;   responsive to determining that the relevance of the first deal is greater than the relevance of the second deal, decreasing the first size of the first tile and the second size of the second tile while increasing the first size of the first tile relative to the second size of the second tile.   
     
     
         20 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
 receiving, from a server at a client device, a collection of deals, wherein each deal comprises a value for each of a plurality of attributes;   generating, by the client device, a profile of a user, the profile representing the user's relative interest in each of the plurality of attributes, wherein the profile of the user is stored only on the one or more memories of the client device such that privacy of the user's profile is maintained;   receiving an input from the user identifying a geographic location and an associated future time period of interest to the user;   determining, by the client device without concurrent communication with the server, a relevance for each deal in the collection of deals, wherein the relevance for each deal is based on one or more metrics representing a distance between the values for the plurality of attributes of each deal and the profile;   selecting, by the client device, a set of deals from the collection of deals based on the determined relevance, the geographic location, and the associated future time period; and   outputting the selected set of deals to a display of the client device.   
     
     
         21 . A client device comprising:
 one or more processors; and   one or more memories operatively coupled to the one or more processors, the one or more memories having instructions stored therein that cause the processor to perform operations comprising:   receiving, from a server at a client device, a collection of deals, wherein each deal comprises a value for each of a plurality of attributes;   generating, at the client device, a profile of a user, the profile representing the user's relative interest in each of the plurality of attributes, wherein the profile of the user is stored only on the one or more memories of the client device such that privacy of the user's profile is maintained;   receiving an input from the user identifying a geographic location and an associated future time period of interest to the user;   determining, at the client device without concurrent communication with the server, a relevance for each deal in the collection of deals, wherein the relevance for each deal is based on one or more metrics representing a distance between the values for the plurality of attributes of each deal and the profile;   selecting, at the client device, a set of deals from the collection of deals based on the determined relevance, the geographic location, and the associated future time; and   outputting the selected set of deals to a display of the client device.
