Abstract

A method for choosing channel coding and/or interleaving scheme is applied in a communication connection over a radio interface between a terminal and a base station of a cellular packet radio system. A certain decision-making device allocates channel coding and/or interleaving schemes to communication connections. A request message is communicated (to the decision-making device, indicating a certain set of Quality of Service parameters associated with a certain first communication connection. The set of Quality of Service parameters is mapped to a certain first channel coding and/or interleaving scheme as a part of the channel coding and/or interleaving scheme allocation made by the decision-making device. The first channel coding and/or interleaving scheme is communicated to the base station and the terminal for them to apply said first channel coding and/or interleaving scheme in the first communication connection.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A method comprising:
receiving, at an apparatus, a request for a specific communication connection with a mobile station, wherein the request corresponds to setting up a new radio bearer for the specific communication connection or changing the characteristics of an existing radio bearer for the specific communication connection, wherein the request comprises a set of desired quality of service parameters corresponding to the specific communication connection; allocating a channel coding scheme, an interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof to the specific communication connection based at least partially on at least one quality of service parameter of the set of desired quality of service parameters; and transmitting information corresponding to the channel coding scheme, the interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof to a base station, the mobile station, or some combination thereof for applying the channel coding scheme, the interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof for use in the specific communication connection.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel coding scheme, the interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof comprises a combination of error detection, error correcting, and interleaving.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the request at the apparatus occurs as a result of a determination that the new radio bearer is to be setup.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the request comprises receiving the request from a serving gateway.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the request at the apparatus occurs as a result of a determination the existing radio bearer is to be changed.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of desired quality of service parameters comprises at least one of a high service precedence, a short mean delay, and a short maximum delay when the request relates to transmitting real-time speech, real-time video, or some combination thereof.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of desired quality of service parameters comprises at least one of a low service precedence, a long mean delay, and a long maximum delay when the request relates to transmitting non-real time data.

         8 . A system comprising:
one or more devices configured to: receive a request for a specific communication connection with a mobile station, wherein the request corresponds to setting up a new radio bearer for the specific communication connection or changing the characteristics of an existing radio bearer for the specific communication connection, wherein the request comprises a set of desired quality of service parameters corresponding to the specific communication connection; allocate a channel coding scheme, an interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof to the specific communication connection based at least partially on at least one quality of service parameter of the set of desired quality of service parameters; and transmit information corresponding to the channel coding scheme, the interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof to a base station, the mobile station, or some combination thereof for applying the channel coding scheme, the interleaving scheme, or some combination thereof for use in the specific communication connection.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices comprise a network node of a wireless communications network.

10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices comprise a radio network controller.

11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices comprise a packet control unit.

12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices are configured to receive the request from one or more serving gateways.

13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices are configured to direct the set of desired quality of service parameters to be negotiated between the mobile station and a serving general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (SGSN).

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the SGSN is configured to request that the one or more devices use a certain quality of service profile based on a capacity, a current traffic load, or some combination thereof.

15 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more devices are configured to identify quality of service parameter values that indicate a first bearer type that is not allocatable and to make a preliminary allocation of a second bearer type that is allocatable.

         16 . An apparatus comprising:
at least one control processor; and at least one computer program code, the at least one computer program code configured to be executed by the at least one control processor to direct the apparatus to perform at least the following:
communicate a request message to a device, wherein the request message is operable to:
request establishment of a communication connection, request that the communication connection be changed, or some combination thereof; and
 indicate at least one requested quality of service parameter associated with the communication connection, wherein the at least one requested quality of service parameter facilitates selecting an interleaving scheme;

receive from the device information corresponding to the interleaving scheme selected using the at least one requested quality of service parameter; and
apply the interleaving scheme to the communication connection.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the at least one requested quality of service parameter indicates at least one of a high service precedence, a short mean delay, and a short maximum delay.

18 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the at least one control processor is configured to communicate a request message to the device as a result of a determination that a new radio bearer is to be setup between the apparatus and a base station.

19 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the at least one control processor is configured to communicate a request message to the device as a result of a determination that an existing radio bearer between the apparatus and a base station is to be changed.

20 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the at least one requested quality of service parameter indicates at least one of a low service precedence, a long mean delay, and a long maximum delay.
