Abstract

This invention relates to a paper substrate useful as a universal release liner, as well as methods of making and using the same.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A paper substrate, comprising
 a web comprising a plurality of cellulosic fibers; and   a composition applied to at least one surface of said web, said coating comprising at least one latex and at least one calcium carbonate, wherein   said latex has a Tg ranging from about 4 to about 10° C.;   said latex has a modulus ranging from about 7×10 6  to about 3×10 7  dyn/cm 2  at a temperature range of from about 120 to about 200° F.; and   said substrate having a Parker Print Smoothness ranging from about 1.0 to about 3.0 as measured by as measured by TAPPI test method T 555 om-99.   
     
     
         2 . The paper substrate according to  claim 1 , further comprising a release layer applied to the coated surface, said release layer comprising a silicone-containing release agent. 
     
     
         3 . The paper substrate according to  claim 2 , further comprising an adhesive layer applied to said release layer. 
     
     
         4 . The paper substrate according to  claim 3 , further comprising a second paper substrate or a plastic substrate applied to said adhesive layer. 
     
     
         5 . The paper substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein said latex is present at an amount ranging from about 10 to about 40 based upon the total weight of the composition. 
     
     
         6 . The paper substrate according to  claim 5 , wherein said calcium carbonate is present at an amount ranging from about 10 to about 30 parts based upon the total weight of the composition. 
     
     
         7 . The paper substrate according to  claim 5 , wherein said latex is a styrene-butadiene-containing latex. 
     
     
         8 . The paper substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein said paper substrate is a release liner. 
     
     
         9 . The paper substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein said composition is present at a coat weight of from about 3 to about 12 lb/3300 ft 2 . 
     
     
         10 . The paper substrate according to  claim 1 , wherein said web has a basis weight of from about 65 to about 90 lb/3000 ft 2 . 
     
     
         11 . A release liner, comprising
 a web of cellulose fibers having at least one surface and at least one composition coated on said at least one surface, the composition comprising from about 20 to about 30 parts of at least one latex based upon the weight of the composition, from about 15 to about 25 parts of at least one calcium carbonate based upon the weight of the composition, wherein said latex has a Tg ranging from about 4 to about 10° C., a modulus ranging from about 7×10 6  to about 3×10 7  dyn/cm 2  at a temperature range of from about 120 to about 200° F.; wherein   said release liner has a basis weight of from about 75 to about 100 lb/3300 ft 2  and a Parker Print Smoothness ranging from about 1.0 to about 3.0 as measured by as measured by TAPPI test method T 555 om-99.   
     
     
         12 . A method of making the release liner according to  claim 11 , comprising
 forming a web comprising a plurality of cellulosic fibers;   applying said composition to at least one surface of said web;   supercalendering at least one coated surface of said web to produce said release liner.   
     
     
         13 . A label, comprising
 the release liner according to  claim 12 ;   a release layer applied to at least one coated surface comprising at least one silicone-containing release agent, said release agent being solventless, emulsion and/or solvent-based;   an adhesive layer applied to said release layer; and   a paper or plastic substrate in contact with said adhesive layer.   
     
     
         14 . A method of making the label according to  claim 13 , comprising
 applying said release layer to at least one supercalendared surface of said release liner;   curing said release layer;   applying at least one adhesive layer to said release layer; and   applying at least one paper or plastic substrate to said adhesive layer.   
     
     
         15 . A paper substrate, comprising
 a coated web comprising a plurality of cellulosic fibers and a coating composition; wherein said coating composition comprises at least one latex and at least one calcium carbonate and the coated web comprises at least one supercalendered coated surface having a Parker Print Smoothness ranging from about 1.0 to about 3.0 as measured by as measured by TAPPI test method T 555 om-99; and   a release layer in contact with the supercalendered coated surface, the release layer comprising solvent-based or solventless silicone.   
     
     
         16 . The paper substrate according to  claim 15 , wherein said coating composition is present at a coat weight of from about 3 to about 12 lb/3300 ft 2 . 
     
     
         17 . The paper substrate according to  claim 15 , wherein the latex contains no or substantially no platinum catalyst inhibitor. 
     
     
         18 . The paper substrate according to  claim 15 , wherein the silicone is cured solvent-based or solventless silicone. 
     
     
         19 . The paper substrate according to  claim 15 , further comprising a backwash layer applied to a surface of the web opposite said supercalendared coated surface. 
     
     
         20 . The paper substrate according to  claim 18 , further comprising
 an adhesive layer applied to the release layer; and   a facestock layer applied to the adhesive layer, the facestock layer comprising a web of cellulosic fibers, plastic, or both.
