Abstract

Systems and methods for dynamically managed data retention are described. The system comprises a tiered framework having a plurality of namespaces. The namespaces are configured by a user to have selected data retention attributes. Data including a manifest may be received by the system, processed, and directed to a namespace based upon the manifest. Data storage partitions may be created automatically in association with a namespace, and the data partitions may be assigned partition attributes. Data in a storage partition may be migrated automatically to another namespace based on the partition attributes. Code necessary for creating storage partitions and migrating data is generated by the data management system.

1 . A method performed on at least one computing device, the method comprising:
 receiving a manifest that is associated with particular data, the received manifest identifying data retention attributes for the associated particular data;   determining, based on the received manifest, a storage partition that possess at least one of the data retention attributes identified by the received manifest; and   storing the associated particular data in the determined storage partition in accordance with the data retention attributes identified by the received manifest.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  where the determining comprises creating, based on the received manifest, the determined storage partition. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  where the data retention attribute comprise a point in time at which the associated particular data stored in the determined storage partition expires. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising migrating the associated particular data stored in the determined storage partition to another storage partition. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4  where the migrating comprises transforming the migrated data. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 4  where the determined storage partition is in a first namespace, and where the another storage partition is in a second namespace. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 4  where a media type of the another storage partition is different than a media type of the determined storage partition. 
     
     
         8 . A system comprising at least one computing device and at least one software module that are together configured for performing actions comprising:
 receiving a manifest that is associated with particular data, the received manifest identifying data retention attributes for the associated particular data;   determining, based on the received manifest, a storage partition that possess at least one of the data retention attributes identified by the received manifest; and   storing the associated particular data in the determined storage partition in accordance with the data retention attributes identified by the received manifest.   
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 1  where the determining comprises creating, based on the received manifest, the determined storage partition. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 1  where the data retention attribute comprise a point in time at which the associated particular data stored in the determined storage partition expires. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 1  further comprising migrating the associated particular data stored in the determined storage partition to another storage partition. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 11  where the migrating comprises transforming the migrated data. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 11  where the determined storage partition is in a first namespace, and where the another storage partition is in a second namespace. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 11  where a media type of the another storage partition is different than a media type of the determined storage partition. 
     
     
         15 . At least one computer-readable storage device storing instructions that, when executed by at least one computing device, cause the at least one computing device to perform actions comprising:
 receiving a manifest that is associated with particular data, the received manifest identifying data retention attributes for the associated particular data;   determining, based on the received manifest, a storage partition that possess at least one of the data retention attributes identified by the received manifest; and   storing the associated particular data in the determined storage partition in accordance with the data retention attributes identified by the received manifest.   
     
     
         16 . The at least one computer-readable storage device of  claim 15  where the determining comprises creating, based on the received manifest, the determined storage partition. 
     
     
         17 . The at least one computer-readable storage device of  claim 15  where the data retention attribute comprise a point in time at which the associated particular data stored in the determined storage partition expires. 
     
     
         18 . The at least one computer-readable storage device of  claim 15  further comprising migrating the associated particular data stored in the determined storage partition to another storage partition. 
     
     
         19 . The at least one computer-readable storage device of  claim 18  where the determined storage partition is in a first namespace, and where the another storage partition is in a second namespace. 
     
     
         20 . The at least one computer-readable storage device of  claim 18  where a media type of the another storage partition is different than a media type of the determined storage partition.
