Red light-emitting implants for treating a spine.

We claim: 
     
         1 . A method of treating a spine, comprising the steps of: a) implanting into a vertebral body an implant comprising a light source and an emission surface, b) powering the light source to transmit light from the light source through the emission surface and across a vertebral endplate. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  further comprising the step of: c) orienting the implant so that the emission surface faces the vertebral endplate. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1  wherein the light source transmits light having a wavelength of between about 650 nm and about 1000 nm.
