Abstract

A method of modifying an original transaction document of a computerized accounting system that includes a general ledger having original transaction postings corresponding to transactions contained in the original transaction document, a new transaction document is generated in response to a command to edit the original transaction document. Next, the new transaction document is modified and saved as a modified new transaction document. The original transaction postings in the general ledger are then nullified. Finally, transactions of the modified new transaction document are posted in the general ledger.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

         1 . A method comprising:
accessing a general ledger that includes original transaction postings corresponding to transactions in an original transaction document; generating a new transaction document, that is substantially a copy of the original transaction document, wherein the new transaction document includes transactions from the original transaction document; modifying, by a computer processor, one of the transactions in the new transaction document; storing the new transaction document with the modified transaction; nullifying, in the general ledger, one or more of the original transaction postings corresponding to the modified transaction; and posting, in the general ledger, the modified transaction of the new transaction document.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the new transaction document is generated in response to a command to edit the original transaction document, and both the new transaction document and the original transaction document are stored.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the new transaction document includes the modified transaction and one or more non-modified transactions from the original transaction document.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein nullifying the one or more original transaction postings corresponding to the modified transaction comprises:
indicating, in the general ledger, that a particular one of the original transaction postings corresponding to the modified transaction has been cancelled or voided.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the modified transaction is posted in the general ledger with the particular original transaction posting that has been cancelled or voided.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the particular original transaction posting is posted in the general ledger without modification.

7 . The method of claim 4 , wherein indicating comprises striking through the particular original transaction posting in the general ledger.

8 . The method of claim 4 , wherein indicating comprises posting a cancelling transaction in the general ledger.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the transaction in the new transaction document comprises adding, deleting, or changing the transaction in the new transaction document.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the transaction in the new transaction document comprises applying a credit, applying a debit, modifying a quantity, or modifying a cost associated with the transaction in the new transaction document.

11 . A computer readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed by a computer, perform a method comprising:
accessing a general ledger that includes original transaction postings corresponding to original transactions in an original transaction document; receiving an input that modifies at least one of the original transactions in the original transaction document; storing a new transaction document, that is separate from the original transaction document and includes non-modified original transactions from the original transaction document and the at least one modified original transaction; nullifying, in the general ledger, one or more of the original transaction postings corresponding to the at least one modified original transaction; and posting, in the general ledger, the at least one modified original transaction of the new transaction document.

12 . The computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one original transaction is modified by adding, deleting, or changing a transaction in the original transaction document.

13 . The computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein nullifying includes posting one or more cancelling transactions in the general ledger that indicate nullification of the one or more original transaction postings.

14 . The computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein nullifying includes voiding the one or more original transaction postings in the general ledger.

15 . The computer readable storage medium of claim 14 , including voiding the original transaction document.

         16 . A system comprising:
a general ledger that includes original transaction postings corresponding to original transactions in an original transaction document; an accounting component that receives a command to modify at least one of the original transactions, generates a new transaction document that includes the at least one modified transaction, posts the at least one modified transaction in the general ledger, and posts the at least one original transaction in the general ledger with an indication that the at least one original transaction has been nullified; and at least one computer processor, that is a functional part of the system, activated by the accounting component to facilitate receiving the command, generating the new transaction document, and posting the at least one modified transaction in the general ledger.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the accounting component indicates, in the general ledger, that the original transaction has been cancelled or voided.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the accounting component prohibits reposting of the original transaction that has been cancelled or voided.

19 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the accounting component nullifies the original transaction such that the original transaction does not affect the balance of the general ledger.

20 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the original transaction is modified by adding, deleting, or changing the original transaction in the original transaction document.
