Method And Apparatus For Tagging Data

Abstract

A system is provided that permits the use of classification information that can be interpreted by a computer system. To this end, a system and method may be provided for creating classification information that may be interpreted by a computer system. Such classification information may be associated with content, and permit a computer system to process the content based on the classification information. In one example, classification information may be associated by a user, system, or process with a portion of content, and a computer system processes the content based on the classification information. For instance, the classification information may cause content to be processed in a particular way, presented to a user by a particular application program, cause the content to be forwarded to a particular user, or otherwise influence how the content is handled.

What is claimed is:

         2 . One or more computer-readable media storing instructions which, when processed by one or more processors, cause:
 transmitting, over one or more communications links to a client device for display at the client device, first bookmark data that specifies a plurality of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for a plurality of Web pages and a plurality of users that saved the plurality of URLs;   receiving, over the one or more communications links from a user at the client device, selection data that indicates a selection, by a user of the client device, of a particular user from the plurality of users, wherein the particular user is different than the user;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, the selection data that indicates the selection by the user of the client device of a particular user from the plurality of users, transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, second bookmark data that indicates a plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for a plurality of Web pages.   
     
     
         3 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in  claim 2 , further comprising additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, tag data that specifies a plurality of keywords that the particular user has assigned to the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages. 
     
     
         4 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in  claim 2 , further comprising additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, a request to save for the user a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, the request to save for the user a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages, generating and storing data that indicates that the particular URL for the particular Web page has been saved in association with the user.   
     
     
         5 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in  claim 4 , further comprising additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, tag data that specifies one or more suggested keywords that a) have not yet been assigned to the particular URL for the particular Web page and b) have been assigned to one or more other URLs for one or more other Web pages with one or more keywords that have been assigned to the particular URL for the particular Web page. 
     
     
         6 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in  claim 2 , further comprising additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, data that indicates a selection of a particular keyword that has been assigned to one or more URLs from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at the client device, the data that indicates a selection of a particular keyword that has been assigned to one or more URLs from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages, transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, third bookmark data that indicates one or more other URLs for one or more other Web pages that have been assigned the particular keyword.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in  claim 2 , further comprising additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, ranking data that indicates a ranking of URLs from the plurality of URLs. 
     
     
         8 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media as recited in  claim 2 , further comprising additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at the client device, classification data selected for a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages;   storing the classification data selected the particular URL for the particular Web page; and   performing one or more actions on the Web page based upon a type of the classification data selected by the user for the particular URL for the particular Web page.   
     
     
         9 . An apparatus comprising:
 one or more processors; and   one or more memories storing instructions which, when processed by one or more processors, cause:   transmitting, over one or more communications links to a client device for display at the client device, first bookmark data that specifies a plurality of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for a plurality of Web pages and a plurality of users that saved the plurality of URLs;   receiving, over the one or more communications links from a user at the client device, selection data that indicates a selection, by a user of the client device, of a particular user from the plurality of users, wherein the particular user is different than the user;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, the selection data that indicates the selection by the user of the client device of a particular user from the plurality of users, transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, second bookmark data that indicates a plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for a plurality of Web pages.   
     
     
         10 . The apparatus as recited in  claim 9 , wherein the one or more memories store additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, tag data that specifies a plurality of keywords that the particular user has assigned to the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages. 
     
     
         11 . The apparatus as recited in  claim 9 , wherein the one or more memories store additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, a request to save for the user a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, the request to save for the user a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages, generating and storing data that indicates that the particular URL for the particular Web page has been saved in association with the user.   
     
     
         12 . The apparatus as recited in  claim 11 , wherein the one or more memories store additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, tag data that specifies one or more suggested keywords that a) have not yet been assigned to the particular URL for the particular Web page and b) have been assigned to one or more other URLs for one or more other Web pages with one or more keywords that have been assigned to the particular URL for the particular Web page. 
     
     
         13 . The apparatus as recited in  claim 9 , wherein the one or more memories store additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, data that indicates a selection of a particular keyword that has been assigned to one or more URLs from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at the client device, the data that indicates a selection of a particular keyword that has been assigned to one or more URLs from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages, transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, third bookmark data that indicates one or more other URLs for one or more other Web pages that have been assigned the particular keyword.

The apparatus as recited in  claim 9 , wherein the one or more memories store additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, ranking data that indicates a ranking of URLs from the plurality of URLs. 
     
     
         15 . The apparatus as recited in  claim 9 , wherein the one or more memories store additional instructions which, when processed by the one or more processors, cause:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at the client device, classification data selected for a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages;   storing the classification data selected the particular URL for the particular Web page; and   performing one or more actions on the Web page based upon a type of the classification data selected by the user for the particular URL for the particular Web page.   
     
     
         16 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
 transmitting, over one or more communications links to a client device for display at the client device, first bookmark data that specifies a plurality of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for a plurality of Web pages and a plurality of users that saved the plurality of URLs;   receiving, over the one or more communications links from a user at the client device, selection data that indicates a selection, by a user of the client device, of a particular user from the plurality of users, wherein the particular user is different than the user;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, the selection data that indicates the selection by the user of the client device of a particular user from the plurality of users, transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, second bookmark data that indicates a plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for a plurality of Web pages.   
     
     
         17 . The computer-implemented method as recited in  claim 16 , further comprising transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, tag data that specifies a plurality of keywords that the particular user has assigned to the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages. 
     
     
         18 . The computer-implemented method as recited in  claim 16 , further comprising:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, a request to save for the user a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, the request to save for the user a particular URL for a particular Web page from the plurality of URLs saved by the particular user for the plurality of Web pages, generating and storing data that indicates that the particular URL for the particular Web page has been saved in association with the user.

The computer-implemented method as recited in  claim 18 , further comprising transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, tag data that specifies one or more suggested keywords that a) have not yet been assigned to the particular URL for the particular Web page and b) have been assigned to one or more other URLs for one or more other Web pages with one or more keywords that have been assigned to the particular URL for the particular Web page. 
     
     
         20 . The computer-implemented method as recited in  claim 16 , further comprising:
 receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at a client device, data that indicates a selection of a particular keyword that has been assigned to one or more URLs from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages;   in response to receiving, over the one or more communications links from the user at the client device, the data that indicates a selection of a particular keyword that has been assigned to one or more URLs from the plurality of URLs for the plurality of Web pages, transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, third bookmark data that indicates one or more other URLs for one or more other Web pages that have been assigned the particular keyword.   
     
     
         21 . The computer-implemented method as recited in  claim 16 , further comprising transmitting over the one or more communications links to the client device, ranking data that indicates a ranking of URLs from the plurality of URLs.
