Abstract

Network performance data is gathered and analyzed to produce network patterns and data delivery strategies. Client devices and other network components report network performance data to a central management system. Data delivery strategies are applied to a portion of a network to deliver content appropriate for network patterns that are associated with the portion of the network.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method, comprising:
 inferring characteristics of a network using network performance data;   determining patterns within the network;   creating an accurate map of a device's location using the inferred characteristics and the determined patterns.   
     
     
         2 . The method as recited in  claim 1 , further comprising:
 delivering a particular quality of content to the device based on a determined pattern associated with the device's location.   
     
     
         3 . The method as recited in  claim 1 , further comprising:
 delivering a particular quality of content to the device based on a determined pattern associated with the device's operating context.   
     
     
         4 . A method, comprising:
 inferring characteristics of a network using network performance data;   determining patterns within the network;   determining a quality of a portion of the network using the determined patterns.   
     
     
         5 . The method as recited in  claim 4 , further comprising:
 delivering a particular quality of content to a device located in the portion of the network based on the determined quality of the portion of the network.   
     
     
         6 . The method as recited in  claim 4 , further comprising:
 repackaging an application based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   delivering the application to a device located in the portion of the network.   
     
     
         7 . The method as recited in  claim 4 , further comprising:
 reconfiguring an application based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   delivering the application to a device located in the portion of the network.   
     
     
         8 . The method as recited in  claim 4 , further comprising:
 repackaging a webpage based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   delivering the webpage to a device located in the portion of the network.   
     
     
         9 . The method as recited in  claim 4 , further comprising:
 reconfiguring a webpage based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   delivering the webpage to a device located in the portion of the network.   
     
     
         10 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a program of instructions that is executable by a device to perform a method, the method comprising:
 inferring characteristics of a network using network performance data;   determining patterns within the network;   creating an accurate map of a device's location using the inferred characteristics and the determined patterns.   
     
     
         11 . The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in  claim 10 , further comprising:
 delivering a particular quality of content to the device based on a determined pattern associated with the device's location.   
     
     
         12 . The non-transitory computer readable medium as recited in  claim 10 , further comprising:
 delivering a particular quality of content to the device based on a determined pattern associated with the device's operating context.   
     
     
         13 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a program of instructions that is executable by a device to perform a method, the method comprising:
 inferring characteristics of a network using network performance data;   determining patterns within the network;   determining a quality of a portion of the network using the determined patterns.

 delivering a particular quality of content to a device located in the portion of the network based on the determined quality of the portion of the network.

 repackaging an application based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   delivering the application to a device located in the portion of the network.

 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that infers characteristics of a network using network performance data;   a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that determines patterns within the network;   a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that creates an accurate map of a device's location using the inferred characteristics and the determined patterns.   
     
     
         20 . The apparatus as recited in  claim 19 , further comprising:
 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that delivers a particular quality of content to the device based on a determined pattern associated with the device's location.

 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that delivers a particular quality of content to the device based on a determined pattern associated with the device's operating context.

 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that infers characteristics of a network using network performance data;   a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that determines patterns within the network;   a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that determines a quality of a portion of the network using the determined patterns.

 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that delivers a particular quality of content to a device located in the portion of the network based on the determined quality of the portion of the network.

 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that repackages an application based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that delivers the application to a device located in the portion of the network.

 a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that reconfigures an application based on the determined quality of the portion of the network;   a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that delivers the application to a device located in the portion of the network.
