Abstract

A composition for influencing carnitine retention in biological tissue is disclosed. The composition comprises a carnitine substance and an agent to increase sodium potassium ATPase pump activity in the tissue, and/or to increase the activity of a carnitine transport protein, and/or to increase blood/plasma insulin concentration.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
.- 66 . (canceled)

. A composition for promoting muscle carnitine accumulation in skeletal muscle, comprising L-carnitine and an agent, wherein the amount of L-carnitine is 0.25 g to 3 g and the amount of the agent is 30 g to 450 g, wherein the composition is formulated for oral delivery to a subject in need thereof, and wherein administration of the agent to the subject increases serum insulin concentration to greater than 50 mU/L.

. A composition according to claim 67 , wherein the agent is operable to increase sodium dependent carnitine uptake into skeletal muscle.

. A composition according to claim 67 , wherein the agent is operable to increase insulin activity in skeletal muscle.

. A composition according to claim 67 , wherein the agent comprises at least one of a carbohydrate, an amino acid, and a protein.

. A composition according to claim 70 , wherein the agent is a carbohydrate.

. A composition according to claim 70 , wherein the agent is an amino acid.

. A composition according to claim 71 , wherein the carbohydrate is a sugar.

. A composition according to claim 71 , wherein the carbohydrate comprises at least one of glucose, sucrose, and fructose.

. A composition according to claim 67 , wherein the amount by weight of the agent is between 10 and 150 times the amount by weight of L-carnitine.

. A composition according to claim 67 , wherein the amount by weight of the agent is between 10 and 95 times the amount by weight of L-carnitine.

. A composition according to claim 67 , wherein the amount by weight of the agent is between 10 and 40 times the amount by weight of L-carnitine.

. A composition according to claim 67 , comprising 0.25 g to 3 g L-carnitine and between 30 g and 120 g of the agent.

. A composition according to claim 67 , comprising 0.25 g to 3 g L-carnitine and between 230 g and 285 g of the agent.

. A composition according to claim 67 in the form of a solution.

. A composition according to claim 67 in the form of an aqueous solution.

. The composition of claim 67 , further comprising an excipient or carrier.

. A method of treatment of carnitine deficiency in the skeletal muscle of a human subject in need thereof, comprising administering to the subject a composition according to claim 67 .
