Abstract

Methods for controlling estrogen metabolite formation in a subject and compositions for use therein are disclosed and described. In one aspect, estrogen metabolite formation may be controlled by coadministering an effective amount of a phytoestrogen and an indole compound.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A method of controlling estrogen metabolite formation in a subject comprising:
co-administering an effective amount of a phytoestrogen with an effective amount of an indole compound, in order to synergistically increase 2-hydroxyestrone production as compared to 2-hydroxestrone production attained by administration of either the phytoestrogen or the indole compound alone.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indole compound is a member selected from the group consisting of: indole-3-carbinol, indoleacetic acid, indolebutyric acid, indolmycin, 3-indolylacetone, indomethacin, and indoramin.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the indole compound is indole-3-carbinol.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the phytoestrogen is a plant derived compounds having a diphenolic structure resembling the structure of a synthetic estrogen.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the phytoestrogen is an isoflavone.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the isoflavone is a member selected from the group consisting of: genistein, diadzein, equol.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the isoflavone is genistein.

8 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the phytoestrogen is a glycoside.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the phytoestrogen is genistein, and the indole compound is indole-3-carbinol.

10 . An estrogen metabolite controlling composition comprising:
a synergistically effective amount of an indole compound and a phytoestrogen compound, said compounds present in amounts sufficient to affect the estrogen metabolism by increasing metabolic production of a 2-hydroxyestrone metabolite.

11 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the indole compound is a member selected from the group consisting of: indole-3-carbinol, indoleacetic acid, indolebutyric acid, indolmycin, 3-indolylacetone, indomethacin, and indoramin.

12 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the indole compound is indole-3-carbinol.

13 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the phytoestrogen is a plant derived compounds having a diphenolic structure resembling the structure of a synthetic estrogen.

14 . The composition of claim 13 , wherein the phytoestrogen is an isoflavone.

15 . The composition of claim 14 , wherein the isoflavone is a member selected from the group consisting of: genistein, diadzein, equol.

16 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the isoflavone is genistein.

17 . The composition of claim 13 , wherein the phytoestrogen is a glycoside.

18 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the phytoestrogen is genistein, and the indole compound is indole-3-carbinol.

19 . The composition of claim 10 , further comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

20 . A method of synergistically biasing estrogen metabolism in a subject toward production of a 2-hydroxyestrone metabolite comprising:
administering to a subject an effective amount of an indole compound and an effective amount of a phytoestrogen.
