Abstract

A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly including a body comprising a double-ended needle and being installable and removable from the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device. A needle cap is configured to cover a skin puncturing end of the double-ended needle and is removable to exposed the skin puncturing end. An outer safety member has a first portion that surrounds the body and a second portion that surrounds the skin puncturing end.

1 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising a double-ended needle and being installable and removable from the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device;   a needle cap configured to cover a skin puncturing end of the double-ended needle and being removable to exposed the skin puncturing end; and   an outer safety member having a first portion that surrounds the body and a second portion that surrounds the skin puncturing end,   wherein the needle tip assembly has the following modes of operation:
 a first mode where the needle cap and the outer safety member are in an installed condition and the outer safety member is in an unlocked position; 
 a second mode where the needle cap is removed and the skin puncturing end is caused to penetrate a skin surface; and 
 a third mode where the needle cap is not reinstalled and one of:
 the outer safety member is moved axially to a locked position; and 
 the outer safety member is in a locked position and is located in an axial position different from the unlocked position. 
 
   
     
     
         2 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein, in the third mode, the outer safety member is locked to the body via ring member. 
     
     
         3 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein, in the third mode, the body is installed on the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device. 
     
     
         4 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein, in the third mode, the outer safety member is locked to the body via a projection that engages with a recess. 
     
     
         5 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein the body is a one-piece body. 
     
     
         6 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein the outer safety cover is a one-piece body. 
     
     
         7 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein the needle cap is a one-piece body. 
     
     
         8 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein the outer safety cover has an axial length that is greater than an axial length of the body. 
     
     
         9 . The assembly of  claim 1 , wherein the outer safety cover has an axial length that is greater than an axial length of the needle cap. 
     
     
         10 . A single-use needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising a double-ended needle and being installable and removable from the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device;   a needle cap configured to cover a skin puncturing end of the double-ended needle and being removable to exposed the skin puncturing end; and   an outer safety member having a first portion that surrounds the body, a second portion that surrounds the skin puncturing end and, and an axial length defined by front and back ends,   wherein the needle tip assembly has the following modes of operation:
 a first mode where the needle cap and the outer safety member are in an installed condition and the outer safety member is in an unlocked position; 
 a second mode where the needle cap is removed and the skin puncturing end is caused to penetrate a skin surface; and 
 a third mode where the needle cap is not reinstalled over the skin puncturing end and the outer safety member assumes a locked position and, in the locked position, the back end of the outer safety member is axially spaced from the skin puncturing end by a greater amount than a back end of the body and the front end of the outer safety member extends forwardly of the skin puncturing end. 
   
     
     
         11 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein, in the third mode, the outer safety member is locked to the body via ring member. 
     
     
         12 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein, in the third mode, the body is installed on the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device. 
     
     
         13 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein, in the third mode, the outer safety member is locked to the body via a projection that engages with a recess. 
     
     
         14 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein the body is a one-piece body. 
     
     
         15 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein the outer safety cover is a one-piece body. 
     
     
         16 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein the needle cap is a one-piece body. 
     
     
         17 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein the outer safety cover has an axial length that is greater than an axial length of the body. 
     
     
         18 . The assembly of  claim 10 , wherein the outer safety cover has an axial length that is greater than an axial length of the needle cap. 
     
     
         19 . A method of installing the assembly of  claim 10  on a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, wherein the method comprises:
 prior to use during injection, installing as a unit the outer safety member, the needle cap and the body with the double-ended needle; 
 removing the needle cap prior to injection; 
 after injection, moving the outer safety member to a locked position; and 
 after the moving, removing the outer safety member with the body disposed therein from the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device, 
 wherein, the locked position, the outer safety member is located axially further back from a skin puncturing end of the double-ended needle that when initially installed. 
 
     
     
         20 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a one-piece body comprising a double-ended needle and being installable and removable from the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device;   a one-piece needle cap configured to cover a skin puncturing end of the double-ended needle and being removable to exposed the skin puncturing end; and   an outer safety cover having a first portion that surrounds the body, a second portion that surrounds the skin puncturing end and, and an axial length defined by front and back ends,   wherein the needle tip assembly has the following modes of operation:
 a first mode where the needle cap and the outer safety cover are in an installed condition and the outer safety cover is in an unlocked position; 
 a second mode where the needle cap is removed and the skin puncturing end is caused to penetrate a skin surface; and 
 a third mode where the needle cap is not reinstalled and the outer safety cover is moved to a locked position while the body remains installed on the pre-loaded syringe or pen needle injection device, and, in the locked position, the back end of the outer safety cover is axially spaced from the skin puncturing end by a greater amount than a back end of the body. 
   
     
     
         21 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising an internal thread;   a needle comprising a first puncturing end projecting from a front side of the body and a second puncturing end extending into a space arranged in the body;   the space arranged in the body being sized and configured to receive therein one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device; and   a safety covering movable to a position overlying the second puncturing end of the needle and partially extending into the space arranged in the body.   
     
     
         22 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 21 , wherein, with the safety covering is in the overlying position, the body is prevented from being re-installed onto the one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device. 
     
     
         23 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 21 , further comprising a movably mounted sleeve axially movable between an initial position and a locked position. 
     
     
         24 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 21 , wherein, after use, the body is prevented from being re-installed onto the one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device. 
     
     
         25 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 21 , further comprising a shield structured and arranged to move between an initial position to a position covering the first puncturing end of the needle. 
     
     
         26 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 25 , further comprising a spring structured and arranged to move the shield between the initial position to the position covering the first puncturing end of the needle. 
     
     
         27 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 21 , wherein the safety covering has an axial length that is shorter than an axial length of the body. 
     
     
         28 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising an internal thread;   a needle having an intermediate portion fixed to a portion of the body and comprising a first puncturing end projecting from a proximal side of the body and a second puncturing end extending into a space arranged in the body;   the space arranged in the body being sized and configured to receive therein one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device; and   a covering movable to a position covering the second puncturing end of the needle,   wherein, when the covering in the covering position, a distal surface of the covering extends outside a distal end the body and a portion of the covering extends inside the space arranged in the body.   
     
     
         29 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 28 , wherein, in the covering position, the body is prevented from being re-installed onto the one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device. 
     
     
         30 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising an internal thread;   a needle having an intermediate portion fixed to a portion of the body and comprising a first puncturing end projecting from a proximal side of the body and a second puncturing end extending into a space arranged in the body;   the space arranged in the body being sized and configured to receive therein one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device;   a covering non-removably coupled to the body and having an axial length that is shorter than an axial length of the body; and   the covering being movable to a position overlying the second puncturing end of the needle,   wherein, when the covering is in the position overlying the second puncturing end of the needle, a distal portion of the covering extends outside a distal end the body and a portion of the covering is disposed inside the space arranged in the body.   
     
     
         31 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising an internal thread;   a needle comprising a first puncturing end projecting from a proximal side of the body and a second puncturing end extending into a space arranged in the body;   the space arranged in the body being sized and configured to receive therein one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device;   a non-removably mounted safety covering that is movable to a position overlying the second puncturing end of the needle,   wherein, when the safety covering is in the position overlying the second puncturing end of the needle, the body is prevented from being reinstalled onto the one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device.   
     
     
         32 . A needle tip assembly for a pre-loaded syringe or a pen needle injection device, the needle tip assembly comprising:
 a body comprising an internal thread;   a needle comprising a first puncturing end projecting from a proximal side of the body and a second puncturing end extending into a space arranged in the body;   the space arranged in the body being sized and configured to receive therein one end of the pre-loaded syringe or the pen needle injection device;   a movable safety covering adapted to cover the second puncturing end; and   said safety covering comprising:
 a first portion; 
 a second portion having a larger-cross-section than the first portion; and 
 an axial length that is shorter than an axial length of the body. 
   
     
     
         33 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 32 , wherein the safety covering is movable to a position defined by:
 a distal surface of the safety covering arranged outside the body; and   the first portion extending into the space arranged in the body.   
     
     
         34 . The needle tip assembly of  claim 32 , wherein the safety covering is non-removably coupled to the body.
