Abstract
Embodiments relate to proislet peptides, preferably HIP, that exhibit increased stability and efficacy, and methods of using the same to treating a pathology associated with impaired pancreatic function, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes and symptoms thereof.

15 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising a peptide of claim 13 and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.
16 . The pharmaceutical composition of claim 15 , wherein the composition comprises a therapeutically effective amount of the peptide.
17 . The pharmaceutical composition of claim 15 , wherein said therapeutically effective amount is from 0.5 to 5 mg/kg.
18 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising a peptide of claim 14 and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.
19 . The pharmaceutical composition of claim 18 , wherein the composition comprises a therapeutically effective amount of the peptide.
20 . The pharmaceutical composition of claim 18 , wherein said therapeutically effective amount is from 0.5 to 5 mg/kg.
21 . The pharmaceutical composition of claim 18 , wherein the modified peptide comprises SEQ ID NO: 7.
22 . The pharmaceutical composition of claim 21 , wherein the modified peptide consists essentially of SEQ ID NO: 7.
23 . A method of stimulating islet neogenesis or stimulating pancreatic islet cell regeneration in a subject in need thereof comprising administering to the subject a peptide of claim 13 .
24 . A method of stimulating islet neogenesis or stimulating pancreatic islet cell regeneration in a subject in need thereof comprising administering to the subject a peptide of claim 14 .
25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the peptide comprises SEQ ID NO: 7.
26 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the peptide consists essentially of SEQ ID NO: 7.
27 . A method of treating diabetes in a subject in need thereof comprising administering to the subject a peptide of claim 13 .
28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the peptide comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 5, SEQ ID NO: 6, SEQ ID NO:7, SEQ ID NO: 14, SEQ ID NO: 15, SEQ ID NO: 16, SEQ ID NO: 17, SEQ ID NO: 18, SEQ ID NO: 19, SEQ ID NO: 23, SEQ ID NO: 24 and SEQ ID NO: 25.
29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the peptide comprises SEQ ID NO: 7.
30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the peptide consists essentially of SEQ ID NO: 7.
