Abstract
The compositions and methods of this invention relate to a leave-on skin care composition containing hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles having an average length of from about 1 to about 500 μm, a particle aspect ratio from about 2 to about 25 and an average thickness of from about 1 to about 500 μm; and a cosmetically acceptable carrier.

18 . A method of removing oil from the skin of a user without irritating the skin of said user, comprising the steps of:
(a) applying a substantially dry skin care composition to the surface of the skin of the user, the composition comprising; (i) hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles having an average length of from about 1 to about 1000 μm, a thickness of from about 1 to about 500 μm, and a particle aspect ratio of from about 1000 to about 2; (ii) at least one cleansing agent comprising a surfactant; and (iii) a carrier; (b) forming a hydrophobic layer on the surface of the skin and preventing the penetration of surfactants, emulsifiers, or other irritating components; (c) leaving said skin care composition on the surface of the skin.
19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles have an oil absorption capacity and retention of from about 150 to about 500% weight oil/weight particles.
20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein said oil absorption capacity and retention of said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles is from about 300 to about 500% weight oil/weight particles.
21 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said particles have an average water contact angle of greater than about 100 degrees.
22 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said particles have an average water contact angle of greater than about 120 degrees.
23 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles are derived from cotton.
24 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants.
25 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said composition comprises from about 1 to about 20 percent by weight of said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles.
26 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the aspect ratio of the hydrophobic, linear particle from about 200 to about 5.
27 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the length of the linear, hydrophobic particles is from about 10 to about 500 microns and the width of the hydrophobic linear particles is from about 5 to about 25 microns.
28 . A method of removing oil from the skin of a user while increasing hydration of the skin, comprising the steps of:
(a) applying a substantially dry skin care composition to the surface of the skin of the user, the composition comprising; (i) hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles having an average length of from about 1 to about 1000 μm, a thickness of from about 1 to about 500 μm, and a particle aspect ratio of from about 1000 to about 2; (ii) at least one cleansing agent comprising a surfactant; and (iii) a carrier; (b) forming a hydrophobic layer on the surface of the skin and preventing trans-epithelial water loss from said skin; (c) leaving said skin care composition on the surface of the skin.
29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles have an oil absorption capacity and retention of from about 150 to about 500% weight oil/weight particles.
30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein said oil absorption capacity and retention of said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles is from about 300 to about 500% weight oil/weight particles.
31 . The method of claim 28 , wherein said particles have an average water contact angle of greater than about 100 degrees.
32 . The method of claim 28 , wherein said particles have an average water contact angle of greater than about 120 degrees.
33 . The method of claim 28 , wherein said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles are derived from cotton.
34 . The method of claim 28 , wherein said surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants.
35 . The method of claim 28 , wherein said composition comprises from about 1 to about 6 percent by weight of said hydrophobic, linear cellulose particles.
36 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the aspect ratio of the hydrophobic, linear particle from about 200 to about 5.
