Abstract

An antiinfective-free formulation for prophylactic treatment of mastitis in dry cows comprises a seal formulation, having approximately 65% by weight of bismuth sub-nitrate in a gel based on aluminum stearate. The seal formulation is prepared by adding the bismuth sub-nitrate to the gel base in at least two separate stages.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 16 . (canceled)

17 . A system for forming a physical barrier in a teat canal of a non-human animal, said system comprising:
a seal formulation for infusing into the teat canal of the animal, the seal formulation being free of an agent that is anti-infective within the teat canal, the seal formulation comprising a non-toxic heavy metal compound in a gel base; wherein the system is antibiotic-free.

18 . The system of claim 17 , further comprising an injector tube for infusing the seal formulation into the teat canal of the animal.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the heavy metal compound comprises a heavy metal salt.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the seal formulation contains at least 40% by weight of the heavy metal salt.

21 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the seal formulation contains from 50% to 75% by weight of the heavy metal salt.

22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the seal formulation contains approximately 65% by weight of the heavy metal salt.

23 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the heavy metal salt is bismuth subnitrate.

24 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the base is a gel based on aluminum stearate.

25 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the base includes liquid paraffin as a vehicle.

26 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the seal formulation has no bacterial action.

27 . A system for forming a physical barrier in a teat canal of a non-human animal and for prophylactic treatment of mammary disorders during the animal's dry period, said system comprising:
a seal formulation that is free of an agent that is anti-infective within the teat canal of the animal and that comprises a non-toxic heavy metal compound in a gel base; and an injector tube for infusing the seal formulation into the teat canal of the animal; wherein the system is antibiotic-free.

28 . The system of claim 27 , wherein the heavy metal compound comprises a heavy metal salt.

29 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the heavy metal salt is bismuth subnitrate.

30 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the seal formulation contains at least 40% by weight of the heavy metal salt.

31 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the seal formulation contains from 50% to 75% by weight of the heavy metal salt.

32 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the seal formulation contains approximately 65% by weight of the heavy metal salt.

33 . The system of claim 27 , wherein the base is a gel based on aluminum stearate.

34 . The system of claim 27 , wherein the base includes liquid paraffin as a vehicle.

35 . The system of claim 27 , wherein the seal formulation has no bacterial action.
