Abstract
The present invention provides engineered protease variants. In particular, the protease variants comprise combinable mutations at selected surface positions that affect the charge and/or hydrophobicity of the enzyme to enhance at least one desired property of the resulting variant enzyme in a chosen application. Compositions comprising the protease variants, and methods for using the same are also provided.

The cleaning composition of claim 5 , further comprising one or more additional enzymes or enzyme derivatives selected from hemicellulases, cellulases, peroxidases, proteases, metalloproteases, xylanases, lipases, phospholipases, esterases, perhydrolasess, cutinases, pectinases, pectate lyases, mannanases, keratinases, reductases, oxidases, phenoloxidases, lipoxygenases, ligninases, pullulanases, tannases, pentosanases, malanases, β-glucanases, arabinosidases, hyaluronidase, chondroitinase, laccase, and amylases, or mixtures thereof.
17 . The cleaning composition of claim 5 , further comprising at least one stabilizing agent.
18 . A cleaning composition comprising at least 0.0001 weight percent of at least one subtilisin variant of claim 5 , and optionally, at least one suitable adjunct ingredient.
19 . A method of cleaning, said method comprising the steps of:
a) contacting a surface and/or an article comprising a fabric with the cleaning composition of claim 5 ; and b) optionally washing and/or rinsing said surface or article.
20 . The cleaning composition of claim 5 , wherein said subtilisin variant has a relative protein expression level performance index (TCA PI) and/or a stain removal activity performance index (BMI PI) that is greater or equal to 0.5.
21 . The cleaning composition of claim 7 , wherein said subtilisin variant has a relative protein expression level performance index (TCA PI) and/or a stain removal activity performance index (BMI PI) that is greater or equal to 0.5.
22 . The cleaning composition of claim 7 , wherein said cleaning composition is a detergent.
23 . The cleaning composition of claim 22 , wherein said detergent is a heavy duty liquid or dry laundry detergent.
24 . The cleaning composition of claim 22 , wherein said detergent is a dish detergent.
25 .
