Historical Media Recommendation Service

Abstract

A media recommendation system for recommending media content that is historically related to seed media content is provided. The recommended media content may be songs, television programs, movies, or a combination thereof, and the seed media content may be a song, television program, or movie. In an embodiment, the system receives information identifying a seed media content, obtains historical information for the seed media content, determines a time window for the seed media content based on the historical information, queries a media content database based on the time window to identify historically related songs associated with media content historically related to the seed media content, and receive a list comprising information identifying the historically related songs.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A server comprising:
 a communication interface adapted to communicatively couple the server to a network;   at least one hardware processor in communication with the communication interface; and   memory storing software executable by the at least one hardware processor whereby the server is operative to:
 receive information identifying a seed media content; 
 obtain historical information for the seed media content; 
 determine a time window for the seed media content based on the historical information; 
 query a media content database based on the time window to identify historically related songs associated with media content historically related to the seed media content; and 
 receive a list comprising information identifying the historically related songs. 
   
     
     
         2 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the seed media content is one of a group consisting of: a seed song, a seed music album, a seed television program, and a seed movie. 
     
     
         3 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the information identifying the seed media content comprises metadata for the seed media content. 
     
     
         4 . The server of  claim 3 , wherein, when the seed media content is a seed song, the metadata for the seed song is one of a group consisting of: title, artist, album, release date, lyrics, and information from ID3 tags. 
     
     
         5 . The server of  claim 3 , wherein the information identifying the seed media content further comprises one or more audio fingerprints for the seed media content. 
     
     
         6 . The server of  claim 3 , wherein the information identifying the seed media content further comprises one or more audio samples of the seed media content. 
     
     
         7 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the information identifying the seed media content comprises one or more audio fingerprints for the seed media content. 
     
     
         8 . The server of  claim 7 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 identify the seed media content using the one or more audio fingerprints for the seed media content.   
     
     
         9 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the information identifying the seed media content comprises one or more audio samples of the seed media content. 
     
     
         10 . The server of  claim 9 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 identify the seed media content using the one or more audio samples of the seed media content.   
     
     
         11 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 send a request to a music server for the historical information for the seed media content.   
     
     
         12 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the historical information for the seed media content comprises date information for events associated with the seed media content. 
     
     
         13 . The server of  claim 12 , wherein the date information for events associated with the seed media content are at least one of a release date for the seed media content, a date that the seed media content first appeared on at least one media popularity chart, a duration or range of dates that the seed media content remained on at least one media popularity chart, a date that the seed media content first went off of at least one media popularity chart, and a date upon which a seed media content was re-released. 
     
     
         14 . The server of  claim 12 , wherein the metadata for the seed media content further comprises the historical information for the seed media content. 
     
     
         15 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the historically related songs are at least one songs released during the time window for the seed media content, songs that were on one or more music charts during the time window for the seed media content, songs by artists that had a song on one or more music charts during the time window for the seed media content, songs by artists who released a song or album during the time window for the seed media content, songs associated with television programs that were popular during the time window for the seed media content, songs associated with television programs that were originally released during the time window for the seed media content, songs associated with movies that were popular during the time window for the seed media content, songs associated with movies that were originally released during the time window for the seed media content. 
     
     
         16 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 generate a list of recommendations from at least a subset of the list comprising information identifying the historically related songs.   
     
     
         17 . The server of  claim 16 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 send the list of recommendations to a user device.   
     
     
         18 . The server of  claim 16 , wherein the recommendations from at least a subset of the list comprising information identifying the historically related songs comprise information from at least one of information identifying the historically related songs, Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) enabling downloading or streaming of the historically related songs, URLs enabling purchase and download of the historically related songs, and URLs enabling playback of samples of the historically related songs. 
     
     
         19 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 filter the list comprising information identifying the historically related songs.   
     
     
         20 . The server of  claim 19 , wherein to filter the list comprising information identifying the historically related songs, the server is operative to filter based on criteria at least one of random selection of the historically related songs, chart position of the historically related songs, one or more music attributes of the historically related songs that are similar to the seed media content, communal profiles for user collections which contain the seed media content. 
     
     
         21 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the server is further operative to:
 prioritize the list comprising information identifying the historically related songs.   
     
     
         22 . The server of  claim 21 , wherein to prioritize the list comprising information identifying the historically related songs, the server is operative to prioritize based on a comparison of the music attributes of the historically related songs with the music attributes of the seed media content when the seed media content is a seed song. 
     
     
         23 . The server of  claim 1 , wherein the media content database comprises at least one of a music database and a video database. 
     
     
         24 . The server of  claim 22 , wherein the video database comprises at least one of a movie database and a television database.
