Abstract

The present invention provides methods for treating anemia in a subject having kidney failure by administering a compound that inhibits hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) prolyl hydroxylase.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method for treating anemia in a subject having kidney failure, the method comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a compound that inhibits hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) prolyl hydroxylase, thereby treating the anemia. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the kidney failure is selected from the group consisting of acute kidney failure and chronic kidney failure. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the compound is a heterocyclic carboxamide. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the heterocyclic carboxamide is selected from the group consisting of pyridine carboxamides, quinoline carboxamides, isoquinoline carboxamides, cinnoline carboxamides, and beta-carboline carboxamides. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the subject is undergoing kidney dialysis. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the compound is delivered orally. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the heterocyclic carboxamide is a compound of formula (I):
