Abstract
Apparatus and methods are disclosed for cleaning interiors of passageways in endoscopes or other luminal medical devices by flow of liquid and gas therethrough. The liquid flow may include rivulets, droplets or other liquid entities which move on the internal surfaces of the passageways, and may include a three-phase contact interface between liquid and dry solid and gas.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWe claim:
1 . A method of cleaning multiple passageways, comprising:
supplying a flow of a gas to the multiple passageways along an interior surface of the multiple passageways; and supplying a flow of a liquid to the multiple passageways along the interior surface of the multiple passageways forming sliding liquid entities along the interior surface of the multiple passageways, wherein said sliding liquid entities provide a moving three-phase interface on the interior surface of the multiple passageways having an advancing contact angle on at least a portion of the interior surface of the multiple passageways greater than about 50 degrees and having a receding contact angle greater than 0 degree so that a portion of the interior surface of the multiple passageways is wetted by the liquid and an adjacent portion of the interior surface of the multiple passageways is dry or nearly dry.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the gas is supplied to the multiple passageways at a substantially constant flow rate while the liquid is supplied to the multiple passageways in a pulsatile manner.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said pulsatile manner comprises alternating periods of greater liquid flowrate and lesser liquid flowrate, or comprises alternating periods of a finite liquid flowrate and periods of zero liquid flowrate.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the periods of zero liquid flowrate are of a duration such that internal surfaces of the multiple passageways are essentially completely dry before a next one of the periods of the finite liquid flowrate.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said gas and said liquid are delivered to more than one of the multiple passageways simultaneously.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the multiple passageways is part of a medical luminal instrument.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the multiple passageways comprise a first passageway, and a second passageway, and wherein the first passageway and the second passageway have different inside diameters.
8 . The method according to claim 7 , wherein the method comprises cleaning the first passageway and the second passageway at the same time.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises cleaning blood from the multiple passageways.Cited by (0)
