Abstract

We disclose measurement systems and methods for measuring analytes in target regions of samples that also include features overlying the target regions. The systems include: (a) a light source; (b) a detection system; (c) a set of at least first, second, and third light ports which transmit light from the light source to a sample and receive and direct light reflected from the sample to the detection system, generating a first set of data including information corresponding to both an internal target within the sample and features overlying the internal target, and a second set of data including information corresponding to features overlying the internal target; and (d) a processor configured to remove information characteristic of the overlying features from the first set of data using the first and second sets of data to produce corrected information representing the internal target.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A measurement system, comprising:
 (a) a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) adapted to transmit light to an in vivo sample comprising skin, fat, and muscle; (b) a detection system adapted to receive light reflected from the sample, wherein the detection system generates a first data set corresponding to a first detection distance and comprising spectral absorbance or reflectance values corresponding to both muscle within the sample, and skin and fat overlying the muscle, and a second data set corresponding to a second detection distance and comprising spectral absorbance or reflectance values corresponding to skin and fat overlying the muscle; and (c) a processor adapted to use spectral absorbance or reflectance values characteristic of the skin and fat from the first data set and the second data set to produce corrected spectral absorbance or reflectance values representing the muscle; wherein the processor is adapted to normalize the first and second data sets prior to producing the corrected spectral absorbance or reflectance values.

2 . The measurement system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of LEDs are combined to provide light having wavelengths corresponding to regions of the electromagnetic spectrum selected from the group consisting of infrared region, near infrared region, visible region, and combinations thereof.

3 . The measurement system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of LEDs comprises LEDs having different emission properties selected from the group consisting of wavelength and intensity.

4 . The measurement system of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of LEDs are configured to provide light in multiple regions of the electromagnetic spectrum at the same time.

5 . The measurement system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of LEDs comprises a first array of LEDs.

6 . The measurement system of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of LEDs further comprises a second array of LEDs.

7 . The measurement system of claim 1 , wherein the detection system comprises a spectrometer.

8 . The measurement system of claim 7 , wherein the spectrometer is adapted to generate sets of spectra from the reflected light.

9 . A method for correcting information corresponding to a target within an in vivo sample comprising skin, fat, and muscle, the method comprising the steps of:
illuminating the sample with at least one light emitting diode (LED); detecting light reflected from the sample; generating a first data set corresponding to a first detection distance and comprising spectral absorbance or reflectance values corresponding to both muscle within the sample and skin and fat overlying the muscle, and a second data set corresponding to a second detection distance and comprising spectral absorbance or reflectance values corresponding to skin and fat overlying the muscle; normalizing the first and second data sets; and using spectral absorbance or reflectance values characteristic of the skin and fat from the normalized first data set and the normalized second data set to produce corrected spectral absorbance or reflectance values representing the muscle.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the illuminating step comprises using a plurality of LEDs.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of LEDs are combined to provide light having wavelengths corresponding to regions of the electromagnetic spectrum selected from the group consisting of infrared region, near infrared region, visible region, and combinations thereof.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of LEDs comprises LEDs having different emission properties selected from the group consisting of wavelength and intensity.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of LEDs are configured to provide light in multiple regions of the electromagnetic spectrum at the same time.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of LEDs comprises a first array of LEDs.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of LEDs further comprises a second array of LEDs.

16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the reflected light is detected with a spectrometer.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the spectrometer is configured to generate sets of spectra from the reflected light.
