Patient Selectable Knee Joint Arthroplasty Devices

Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods and devices for repairing articular surfaces in a knee joint. The articular surface repairs are customizable or highly selectable for each patient and geared toward providing optimal fit and function. Kits are also provided to enable customized repairs to be performed.

What is claimed: 
     
         1 . A patient-specific prosthetic device for a femur of a knee joint of a patient comprising:
 (a) a femoral condyle portion having (i) a superior surface configured to substantially conform to and abut one or more flat bone portions of a cut femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient, and (ii) an articular surface configured as an articulating surface of a condyle; and   (b) a trochlear groove portion having a bone abutting surface configured and sized such that at least a portion of the bone abutting surface abuts at least a portion of an anterior cut of the femur when the superior surface of the femoral condyle portion is positioned to abut the one or more flat bone portions of the cut femoral condyle and   wherein a margin of the femoral condyle portion has a shape including information of at least a portion of the shape of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient.   
     
     
         2 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 1 , wherein the shape includes at least in part information on existing cartilage of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         3 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 1 , wherein the information includes at least in part information on a corrected condition of at least a portion of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         4 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 1 , wherein the information includes information concerning a mechanical or anatomical axis of the knee joint of the patient, and wherein at least one of the flat bone portions has a predetermined position relative to the mechanical or anatomical axis. 
     
     
         5 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 1 , wherein the information includes at least in part information on a measurement of at least a portion of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         6 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 1 , wherein the information includes at least in part information on subchondral bone of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         7 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 1 , wherein the information includes at least in part information on a curvature of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         8 . A patient-specific prosthetic device for a femur of a diseased or damaged knee joint of a patient comprising:
 (a) a femoral condyle portion having (i) a superior surface configured to substantially conform to and abut one or more flat bone portions of a cut femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient, and (ii) an articular surface configured as an articulating surface of a condyle; and   (b) a trochlear groove portion having a bone abutting surface configured and sized such that at least a portion of the bone abutting surface abuts at least a portion of an anterior cut of the femur when the superior surface of the femoral condyle portion is positioned to abut the one or more flat bone portions of the cut femoral condyle; and   wherein the femoral condyle portion includes information specific for the patient, wherein the information includes a measurement of the diseased or damaged femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient.   
     
     
         9 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 8 , wherein the information includes a measurement of existing cartilage of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         10 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 8 , wherein the information includes a measurement of a corrected condition of at least a portion of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         11 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 8 , wherein the information includes a measurement of an electronic model of at least a portion of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         12 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 8 , wherein the information includes a measurement of at least a portion of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         13 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 8 , wherein the information includes a measurement of subchondral bone of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient. 
     
     
         14 . The patient-specific prosthetic device of  claim 8 , wherein the information includes a curvature of the femoral condyle of the knee joint of the patient.
