Determining if an Application is Cached
Abstract
In general, the subject matter described in this specification can be embodied in methods, systems, and program products for determining if a web application is cached. A source web application that is executed by a web browser that is installed on a computing device determines that the web browser is to navigate to a target web application. The source web application determines whether resources for the target web application are cached at the computing device. The source web application performs actions to request resources for the target web application based on the determination whether resources for the target web application are cached, wherein the actions comprise requesting resources for the target web application using a first address if the target web application is determined to be cached and using a second address if the target web application is determined to not be cached.

determining, by a computing device, that a web browser has received a request to navigate to a target web page using a first address; determining, by the computing device, that the first address includes, at an end of the first address, a first portion that is of a type that the web browser is configured to drop from the first address should the web browser use the first address to send a request to a remote server system for resources that correspond to the target web page; determining, by the computing device in response to having received the request and before requesting the resources that correspond to the target web page, that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at a cache of the computing device; changing, by the computing device, the first address by replacing the first portion at the end of the first address with a second portion in order to generate a second address, wherein the second portion is of a type that the web browser is configured to include in the second address should the web browser use the second address to send a request to the remote server system for the resources that correspond to the target web page; and requesting, by the computing device and in response to having received the request and having determined that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device, the resources that correspond to the target web page using the second address instead of the first address.

30 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device is performed without sending, to the cache of the computing device, a request for resources.
31 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving, by the computing device and in response to requesting the resources that correspond to the target web page, the resources that correspond to the target web page from the remote server system and storing the resources that correspond to the target web page in the cache of the computing device; determining, by the computing device, that the web browser has received a second request to navigate to the target web page using the first address; determining, by the computing device and in response to having received the second request, that the resources that correspond to the target web page are cached at the cache of the computing device; requesting, by the computing device and in response to having received the second request and having determined that the resources that correspond to the target web page are cached at the cache of the computing device, the resources that correspond to the target web page using the first address.
32 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:
the request to navigate to the target web page resulted from user selection of a link that is in a particular web page and that is directed to the target web page; and the following operations are performed by the web browser as a result of executing instructions that are included in resources of the particular web page that includes the link:
(i) the determining that the first address includes the first portion;
(ii) the determining that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device;
(iii) the changing of the first address to generate the second address; and
(iv) the requesting the resources that correspond to the target web page using the second address instead of the first address.
33 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion includes a hash (#) symbol that separates the first portion from a remainder of the first address.
34 . The computer-implemented method of claim 33 , wherein the second portion includes a question (?) symbol or a slash (/) symbol that separates the second portion from a remainder of the second address.
35 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion includes content and the second portion includes the content of the first portion.
36 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device includes requesting resources for a third address that is different than the first address and the second address.
37 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device includes analyzing a cookie.
38 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processing devices, cause performance of operations, the operations comprising:
determining, by a computing device, that a web browser has received a request to navigate to a target web page using a first address; determining, by the computing device, that the first address includes, at an end of the first address, a first portion that is of a type that the web browser is configured to drop from the first address should the web browser use the first address to send a request to a remote server system for resources that correspond to the target web page; determining, by the computing device in response to having received the request and before requesting the resources that correspond to the target web page, that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at a cache of the computing device; changing, by the computing device, the first address by replacing the first portion at the end of the first address with a second portion in order to generate a second address, wherein the second portion is of a type that the web browser is configured to include in the second address should the web browser use the second address to send a request to the remote server system for the resources that correspond to the target web page; and requesting, by the computing device and in response to having received the request and having determined that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device, the resources that correspond to the target web page using the second address instead of the first address.
39 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein determining that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device is performed without sending, to the cache of the computing device, a request for resources
40 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein the operations further comprise:
receiving, by the computing device and in response to requesting the resources that correspond to the target web page, the resources that correspond to the target web page from the remote server system and storing the resources that correspond to the target web page in the cache of the computing device; determining, by the computing device, that the web browser has received a second request to navigate to the target web page using the first address; determining, by the computing device and in response to having received the second request, that the resources that correspond to the target web page are cached at the cache of the computing device; requesting, by the computing device and in response to having received the second request and having determined that the resources that correspond to the target web page are cached at the cache of the computing device, the resources that correspond to the target web page using the first address.
41 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein:
the request to navigate to the target web page resulted from user selection of a link that is in a particular web page and that is directed to the target web page; and the following operations are performed by the web browser as a result of executing instructions that are included in resources of the particular web page that includes the link:
(i) the determining that the first address includes the first portion;
(ii) the determining that the resources that correspond to the target web page are not cached at the cache of the computing device;
(iii) the changing of the first address to generate the second address; and
(iv) the requesting the resources that correspond to the target web page using the second address instead of the first address.
42 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 38 , wherein the first portion includes a hash (#) symbol that separates the first portion from a remainder of the first address.
