Abstract

Disclosed is a system and method for registering images from two medical imaging modalities in a six-degree-of-freedom coordinate space, for the purpose of providing real time registered imagery for optimization of medical procedures. The system and method uses fiducial that is visible to the first imager and in a fixed position and orientation relative to the second imager. The first imager may be an X-ray device such as a C-arm fluoroscope, and the second imager may be a Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) device.

1 - 10 . (canceled)

11 . A device for registering images acquired by a plurality of medical imaging modalities comprising:
a support structure; a first wire disposed on the support structure, the first wire substantially formed in the shape of a straight line; and a second wire disposed on the support structure, the second wire substantially formed in the shape of an ellipse.

12 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the support structure includes a hollow cylinder.

13 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the first wire and second wire include Tantalum.

14 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the first wire includes a diameter of about 1 mm.

15 . The device of claim 11 , wherein the second wire includes a diameter of about 1 mm.

         16 - 27 . (canceled)
