Abstract
One exemplary embodiment of a shingle includes a substrate, a surface layer of granules, a backdust layer, and hydrophobic material. The substrate is infiltrated with asphalt to form a first asphalt coating on the top or upper surface of the substrate and a second asphalt coating on the bottom or lower surface of the substrate. A surface layer of granules is embedded in the first asphalt coating. A backdust layer of particles is embedded in the second asphalt coating. A hydrophobic material is applied to at least one of the surface layer and the backdust layer.

a substrate infiltrated with asphalt forming a first asphalt coating on the top or upper surface of the substrate and a second asphalt coating on the bottom or lower surface of the substrate; a surface layer of granules embedded in the first asphalt coating a; a backdust layer of particles embedded in the second asphalt coating; and a hydrophobic material applied to at least one of the surface layer and the backdust layer.
2 . The shingle of claim 1 , wherein the contact angle of the surface with the hydrophobic material is greater than about 70 degrees.
3 . The shingle of claim 1 , wherein the contact angle of the surface with the hydrophobic material is greater than about 80 degrees.
4 . The shingle of claim 1 , wherein the contact angle of the surface with the hydrophobic material is greater than about 90 degrees.
5 . The shingle of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic material sufficiently prohibits moisture from infiltrating between stacked shingles such that less than 25% of the bottom surface area of the top shingle is wet.
6 . The shingle of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic material is a coating.
7 . The shingle of claim 6 , wherein the backdust particles are coated with the hydrophobic material.
8 . The shingle of claim 7 , wherein the backdust particles are coated with the hydrophobic material prior to being embedded into the second asphalt coating.
9 . The shingle of claim 6 , wherein a portion of the back or lower surface of the shingle is coated with the hydrophobic material.
10 . The shingle of claim 6 , wherein a portion of the top or upper surface of the shingle is coated with the hydrophobic material.
11 . The shingle of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the backdust particles and granules are coated with the hydrophobic material.
12 . The shingle of claim 6 , wherein the hydrophobic material is a silane solution.
13 . The shingle of claim 12 , wherein the silane solution is a methyl silane solution.
14 . The shingle of claim 12 , wherein the concentration of silane is between about 0.25% and 2%.
15 . The shingle of claim 12 , wherein between about 0.5 g and 2 g of silane is applied per square.
16 . The shingle of claim 15 , wherein about 1.1 g of silane is applied per square.
17 . The shingle of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic material comprises particles included in at least one of the backdust particles and granules of the shingle.
18 . The shingle of claim 17 , wherein substantially all of at least one of the backdust particles and granules of the shingle are hydrophobic material particles.
19 . The shingle of claim 17 , wherein the majority of at least one of the backdust particles and granules of the shingle are hydrophobic material particles.
20 . The shingle of claim 17 , wherein the hydrophobic material comprises Titanium mineral particles.
21 . The shingle of claim 17 , wherein the hydrophobic material comprises Titanium dioxide particles.
