Abstract
A zone power cap for a power management zone that defines a limit of power consumption for the power management zone is determined. The power management zone comprises a plurality of components, wherein the power management zone is associated with a controller. A set of one or more characteristics of a workload associated with the power management zone is determined. A component power cap for one or more of the plurality of components is set based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 - 7 . (canceled)
8 . A computer program product comprising:
a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions comprising program instructions to:
determine a zone power cap for a power management zone that defines a limit of power consumption for the power management zone, wherein the power management zone comprises a plurality of components, wherein the power management zone is associated with a power management controller;
determine a set of one or more characteristics of a workload associated with the power management zone; and
set a component power cap for one or more of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap.
9 . The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the program instructions to determine the set of one or more characteristics of the workload associated with the power management zone comprise program instructions to at least one of:
read metadata associated with the workload; analyze the execution of the workload; analyze statistics associated with the workload; and determine the power consumption of each of the plurality of components with respect to the component power cap for the respective component of the plurality of components.
10 . The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the program instructions to determine the set of one or more characteristics of the workload associated with the power management zone comprise program instructions to determine whether the workload is a processor-oriented workload or a memory-oriented workload.
11 . The computer program product of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions to determine whether the workload is a processor-oriented workload or a memory-oriented workload comprise program instructions to determine a proportion of workload instructions that access the memory associated with the processor.
12 . The computer program product of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions to set a component power cap for the one or more of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap comprise program instructions to, in response to a determination that the workload is a processor-oriented workload, at least one of increasing the power cap for a processor, decrease the power cap for memory associated with the processor, and a combination thereof.
13 . The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the program instructions to set the component power cap for the one or more component of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap comprise program instructions to set the component power cap for the one or more component of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap in response to at least one of receiving an indication that the zone power cap has changed and receiving an indication that the workload has changed.
14 . The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the program instructions to set the component power cap for the one or more of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap comprise program instructions to overwrite indications of performance states associated with each of the plurality of components.
15 . An apparatus comprising:
a power management controller, wherein the power management controller is associated with a power management zone, wherein the power management zone comprises a plurality of components; and one or more computer readable storage media having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to,
determine a zone power cap for the power management zone that defines a limit of power consumption for the power management zone;
determine a set of one or more characteristics of a workload associated with the power management zone; and
set a component power cap for one or more of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap.
16 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the program instructions being executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to determine the set of one or more characteristics of the workload associated with the power management zone comprise program instructions executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to at least one of:
read metadata associated with the workload; analyze the execution of the workload; analyze statistics associated with the workload; and determine the power consumption of each of the plurality of components with respect to the component power cap for the respective component of the plurality of components.
17 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of components comprises a processor and memory associated with the processor, wherein the program instructions being executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to determine the set of one or more characteristics of the workload associated with the power management zone comprise program instructions executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to determine whether the workload is a processor-oriented workload or a memory-oriented workload.
18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the program instructions being executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to set a component power cap for the one or more of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap comprise program instructions executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to, in response to a determination that the workload is a processor-oriented workload, at least one of increasing the power cap for the processor, decrease the power cap for the memory associated with the processor, and a combination thereof.
19 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the program instructions being executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to set the component power cap for the one or more component of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap comprise program instructions executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to set the component power cap for the one or more component of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap in response to at least one of receiving an indication that the zone power cap has changed and receiving an indication that the workload has changed.
20 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the program instructions being executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to set the component power cap for the one or more of the plurality of components based, at least in part, on the set of one or more characteristics of the workload and the zone power cap comprise program instructions executable by the power management controller to cause the apparatus to overwrite indications of performance states associated with each of the plurality of components.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
