Claims

Abstract

A network attached storage management appliance that can be inserted into a pre-existing network. The appliance sits between an end user and the available storage and optimizes performance and storage through acceleration of data, migration of data, compression of data, deduplication of data, and expansion of storage. The device moves data between lower- and higher-performance storage, with frequently accessed data sitting in higher-performance storage and infrequently accessed data sitting in lower-performance storage.

         1 . An apparatus comprising a network-attached storage enhancement device, wherein the network-attached storage enhancement device includes means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device. 
     
     
         2 . The network-attached storage enhancement device of  claim 1 , wherein the means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device include acceleration means. 
     
     
         3 . The network-attached storage enhancement device of  claim 1 , wherein the means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device include storage expansion means. 
     
     
         4 . The network-attached storage enhancement device of  claim 1 , wherein the means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device include data migration means. 
     
     
         5 . The network-attached storage enhancement device of  claim 1 , wherein the means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device include data compression means. 
     
     
         6 . The network-attached storage enhancement device of  claim 1 , wherein the means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device include data de-duplication means. 
     
     
         7 . The network-attached storage enhancement device of  claim 1 , wherein the means for enhancing performance and utility of an existing storage hardware device include means for utilizing cloud storage.
