Abstract

An acetabular drill pin including an elongated shaft having a proximal end and a distal end opposite thereof along a longitudinal axis of the shaft; at least two depth markings along the shaft, each of the at least two depth markings being positioned a pre-defined distance from the distal end of the shaft; and a fluted portion proximate the distal end of the shaft, the fluted portion being disposed between a shoulder and a flat-bottom milling tip, the tip being configured to penetrate a peri-acetabular area of a pelvis as the fluted portion is imparted with rotary motion.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An acetabular drill pin, comprising:
 an elongated shaft having a proximal end and a distal end opposite thereof along a longitudinal axis of the shaft;   at least two depth markings along the shaft, each of the at least two depth markings being positioned a pre-defined distance from the distal end of the shaft; and   a fluted portion proximate the distal end of the shaft, the fluted portion being disposed between a shoulder and a flat-bottom milling tip, the tip being configured to penetrate a peri-acetabular area of a pelvis as the fluted portion is imparted with rotary motion.   
     
     
         2 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 1 , wherein the fluted portion is cylindrical or frustoconical in shape and includes a plurality of flutes configured to remove debris as the drill pin penetrates the peri-acetabular area of the pelvis. 
     
     
         3 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 2 , wherein the plurality of flutes are arranged in a helical pattern comprising between about 2 and about 6 flutes. 
     
     
         4 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 1 , wherein the shoulder is positioned between about 18 mm and about 20 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip of the shaft. 
     
     
         5 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 4 , wherein the shoulder is positioned about 19 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip of the shaft. 
     
     
         6 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 1 , wherein the shoulder is configured to function as a stop surface that generates tactile feedback as the shoulder encounters the peri-acetabular area of the pelvis. 
     
     
         7 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 1 , wherein one of the at least two depth markings is positioned between about 57 mm and about 58 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip of the shaft and a second of the at least two depth markings is positioned between about 72 mm and about 73 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip of the shaft. 
     
     
         8 . An acetabular drill pin, comprising:
 an elongated shaft having a proximal end and a distal end opposite thereof along a longitudinal axis of the shaft, the distal end being defined by a flat-bottom milling tip;   a first depth marking positioned between about 57 mm and about 58 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip;   a second depth marking positioned between about 72 mm and about 73 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip;   a stop surface positioned between about 18 mm and about 20 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip; and   a fluted portion proximate the distal end of the shaft, the fluted portion being disposed between the stop surface and the flat-bottom milling tip.   
     
     
         9 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 8 , wherein the fluted portion is cylindrical or frustoconical in shape and includes a plurality of flutes configured to remove debris as the drill pin penetrates a peri-acetabular area of a pelvis. 
     
     
         10 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 9 , wherein the plurality of flutes are arranged in a helical pattern comprising between about 2 and about 6 flutes. 
     
     
         11 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 8 , wherein the stop surface is positioned about 19 mm from the flat-bottom milling tip of the shaft. 
     
     
         12 . The acetabular drill pin of  claim 8 , wherein the stop surface is configured to generate tactile feedback upon encountering a peri-acetabular area of the pelvis.
