Abstract
A method for cultivating algae can include providing a body of water in a substantially enclosed system. The enclosed system can have a length of channel and a cover. The method can optionally include circulating the body of water through the enclosed system under positive pressure conditions. The positive pressure should prevent ingress of any external atmosphere or material. Further, the method can include cultivating the algae in the body of water at conditions which promote growth. Likewise, a system for cultivating algae can include a channel with a cover, water in the channel, and a pump to introduce positive pressure into the system.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A system for cultivating algae, comprising:
a channel with a cover system that substantially closes the channel to an outside environment and forms a protected growth volume, the cover system being designed to selectively adjust amounts of light allowed to enter the protected growth volume; a body of water including one or more algae contained in the channel; and a gas pump configured to introduce a positive pressure into the protected growth volume.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the cover system includes a first cover and a second cover, such that the first cover has a greater translucence than the second cover.
3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the first cover and the second cover are configured to cover different portions of the channel.
4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the second cover is configured to removably cover at least a portion of the channel and the first cover.
5 . The system of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the second cover is opaque or substantially opaque sufficient to block light to promote heterotrophic growth of the algae.
6 . The system of claim 2 , wherein at least one of the first and second covers includes perforations.
7 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a reflecting layer on a portion of an inner wall of the channel within the protected growth volume, said reflecting layer oriented to redirect light through the protected growth volume.
8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the cover system includes a flexible plastic material.
9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is substantially closed and the body of water circulates through the system.
10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is substantially closed and the body of water is aerated.
11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the channel has a sloped contour forming a longitudinal depression along a length of the channel which is lower than surrounding portions of an inner wall of the channel.
12 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising an aeration pipe oriented along at least a portion of the longitudinal depression and operatively connected to the gas pump.
13 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a securing mechanism to retain the cover system over the channel, said securing mechanism including recessed channels along opposing upper edges of the channel and at least one elongated member shaped to fit into the recessed channels sufficient to retain a flexible cover lying in the recessed channels.
14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the channel is formed above the earth.
15 . A multi-stage method of cultivating algae, comprising
providing a body of water in a substantially enclosed system including a length of channel, a first cover, and a second cover, wherein at least one of the first cover and second cover contributes to the substantially enclosed system and the first cover has a greater translucence than the second cover; and cultivating said algae within the body of water under conditions sufficient to promote growth of algae, wherein the growth includes a light growth stage and a dark growth stage, said dark growth stage being a function of the second cover being oriented over the body of water.
16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising circulating the body of water through the enclosed system under positive pressure conditions sufficient to prevent ingress of external atmosphere or material.
17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the body of water is circulated through a first length of the channel covered by the first cover and subsequently circulated through a second length of the channel covered by the second cover.
18 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising aerating the body of water by injecting a gas into the body of water to vertically circulate the body of water along substantially an entire depth of the body of water.
19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the cultivating said algae includes exposing the algae to light through the first cover to induce the light growth stage and subsequently covering the first cover with the second cover to induce the dark growth stage.
20 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the conditions for growth of the algae are selected and maintained to promote selective growth of the algae over undesired strains of algae.
21 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising forming the enclosed system by steps including:
forming the length of channel above the earth; covering at least a portion of the channel with the first cover, where the first cover is a plastic sheet having perforations therein; and securing the first cover sufficient to form a seal with the channel.Cited by (0)
