Abstract

A system and method are provided for detecting entity information contained within search results. The detected entity information can be used to determine a category of entity as well as a specific entity within the search results. Entity information can be extracted from the documents associated with the search results. This information can be used as part of the information for an entity card, which can be displayed to a user in conjunction with and/or in place of the search results.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A computer-implemented system for displaying one or more entity cards in search result listings, the system comprising:
one or more processors; and one or more computer-storage media storing computer-useable instructions that, when executed the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising: obtaining search results responsive to a search query; extracting a plurality of entities from the search results; generating relevance scores for each of the plurality of extracted entities based on an analysis of the search results, each relevance score quantifying relevance of the extracted entity to one of more of the search results; selecting an entity from the plurality of extracted entities based on a ranking of the relevance score of the entity amongst the relevance scores; identifying an entity category assigned to the entity; retrieving entity information regarding the entity based on the entity category assigned to the entity; incorporating the retrieved entity information into an entity card; and providing the entity card for display with at least some of the search results in a search result listing.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the entity category of the entity determines types of the entity information to be retrieved, an entity category of another of the extracted entities corresponding to at least some different types of entity information than the entity category of the entity.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the entity information that is retrieved corresponds to a secondary intent of the search query.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the entity category corresponds to a movie category and the retrieved entity information comprises theater locations based on a secondary intent of the search query.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the entity category corresponds to a sports category and the retrieved entity information comprises a link to a site that has tickets based on a secondary intent of the search query.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:
selecting an additional entity based on the relevance score of the additional entity; identifying an entity category assigned to the additional entity; retrieving entity information regarding the additional entity based on the entity category assigned to the additional entity; incorporating the retrieved entity information regarding the additional entity into an additional entity card; and providing the additional entity card for the display with the at least some of the search results in the search result listing.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the entity category of the additional entity is different than the entity category of the entity, causing different types of information to be retrieved for the entity card of the additional entity than the entity card of the entity.

8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the selecting of the entity is based on the relevance score of the entity exceeding a threshold and the selecting of the additional entity is based on the relevance score of the additional entity exceeding the threshold.

9 . One or more computer-storage media devices storing computer-useable instructions that, when executed by a computing device, perform a method for displaying one or more entity cards in search result listings, the method comprising:
obtaining search results responsive to a search query; extracting a plurality of entities from the search results; generating relevance scores for each of the plurality of extracted entities based on an analysis of the search results, each relevance score quantifying relevance of the extracted entity to one of more of the search results; selecting an entity from the plurality of extracted entities based on the relevance score of the entity exceeding a threshold value; identifying an entity category assigned to the entity; retrieving entity information regarding the entity based on the entity category assigned to the entity; incorporating the retrieved entity information into an entity card; and providing the entity card for display with at least some of the search results in a search result listing.

10 . The one or more computer-storage media of claim 9 , wherein at least some of the entity information that is retrieved corresponds to a secondary intent of the search query.

11 . The one or more computer-storage media of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises:
selecting an additional entity based on the relevance score of the additional entity; identifying an entity category assigned to the additional entity; retrieving entity information regarding the additional entity based on the entity category assigned to the additional entity; incorporating the retrieved entity information regarding the additional entity into an additional entity card; and providing the additional entity card for the display with the at least some of the search results in the search result listing.

12 . The one or more computer-storage media of claim 11 , wherein the entity category of the additional entity is different than the entity category of the entity, causing different types of information to be retrieved for the entity card of the additional entity than the entity card of the entity.

13 . The one or more computer-storage media of claim 11 , wherein the selecting of the entity is based on the relevance score of the entity exceeding a threshold and the selecting of the additional entity is based on the relevance score of the additional entity exceeding the threshold.

14 . A computer-implemented method for displaying one or more entity cards in search result listings, the method comprising:
obtaining search results responsive to a search query; extracting a plurality of entities from the search results, each extracted entity being corresponding to an entity category; generating relevance scores for each of the plurality of extracted entities based on an analysis of the search results, each relevance score quantifying relevance of the extracted entity to one or more of the search results; selecting an entity from the plurality of extracted entities based on the relevance score of the entity exceeding a threshold; retrieving entity information regarding the entity based on the entity category assigned to the entity, the entity category determining types of the entity information to be retrieved, wherein at least some of the entity information corresponds to a secondary intent of the search query; incorporating at least some of the retrieved entity information into an entity card; and providing the retrieved entity information, including the entity card, for display with at least some of the search results in a search result listing.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the entity category corresponds to a movie category and the at least some of the entity information that corresponds to the secondary intent of the search query comprises theater locations.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the entity category corresponds to a sports category and the at least some of the entity information that corresponds to the secondary intent of the search query comprises a link to a site that has tickets.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least some of the retrieved entity information is incorporated into at least two entity cards and the at least two entity cards are provided for display with the at least some of the search results in the search result listing.

18 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises:
selecting an additional entity based on the relevance score of the additional entity; identifying an entity category assigned to the additional entity; retrieving entity information regarding the additional entity based on the entity category assigned to the additional entity; incorporating the retrieved entity information regarding the additional entity into a additional entity card; and providing the additional entity card for the display with the at least some of the search results in the search result listing.
