Allantoin-Containing Skin Cream

Abstract

An allantoin-containing skin cream composition can comprise allantoin and at least one anionic or nonionic emulsifier that is substantially hydrophilic and is soluble in water. The composition is in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion. The pH of the composition is in a range of from about 3.0 to about 6.0; preferably, the pH of the composition is from about 5.0 to about 6.0. The composite can further comprise an acidic anionic polymer. A preferred acidic anionic polymer is a carboxypolymethylene polymer. The composition can further comprise a carbohydrate polymer such as galactoarabinan, polygalactose or polyarabinose. The composition can additionally comprise other ingredients such as herbal extracts, an antioxidant component, an emollient component, a chelator, a solvent component or a preservative component. The composition is useful as a skin protectant.

         106 . A composition consisting essentially of an oil-in-water emulsion comprising:
 (a) allantoin in an amount from about 0.5% to about 10.0% of the composition;   (b) an emulsifier system including beeswax and an anionic emulsifier that is substantially hydrophilic and is soluble in water;   (c) an emollient component comprising one or more of lanolin oil, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cod liver oil, and butylated hydroxytoluene;   (d) an acid to adjust the pH of the composition to a value from about 3.0 to about 6.0;   (e) water in an amount from about 50% to about 90% of the composition;   (f) propylene glycol in an amount from about 2.0% to about 9.0% of the composition;   (g) tetrasodium EDTA in an amount from about 0.05% to about 0.25% of the composition;   (h) methylparaben in an amount from about 0.10% to about 0.50% of the composition; and   (i) propylparaben in an amount from about 0.10% to about 0.50% of the composition,   wherein the allantoin is stable in the composition for 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days at 40° C.   
     
     
         107 . The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the allantoin is in an amount from about 0.50% to about 2.0% of the composition. 
     
     
         108 . The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the allantoin is in an amount from about 1.0% to about 2.0% of the composition.

The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the anionic emulsifier is selected from the group consisting of ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium oleyl succinate, ammonium lauryl sulfosuccinate, sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate, ammonium laureth sulfate, sodium N-lauryl sarcosinate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         110 . The composition of  claim 109 , wherein the anionic emulsifier is sodium lauryl sulfate. 
     
     
         111 . The composition of  claim 110 , wherein the sodium lauryl sulfate is in an amount from about 0.5% to about 2.5% of the composition. 
     
     
         112 . The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the emollient component comprises lanolin oil, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cod liver oil, and butylated hydroxytoluene. 
     
     
         113 . The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the lanolin oil is in an amount from about 5.0% to about 15.0% of the composition. 
     
     
         114 . The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the cetyl alcohol is in an amount from about 3.0% to about 10.0% of the composition.

         126 . The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the acid comprises at least one organic acid and at least one inorganic acid.

The composition of  claim 106 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one component selected from the group consisting of fragrance, proteins, humectants, essential oils, vitamins, colorants, hydroxyacids, plant extracts, sunscreens, sodium hyaluronate, lipids, fatty acids, thickeners, panthenol, and combinations thereof. 
     
     
         128 . A composition consisting essentially of an oil-in-water emulsion comprising:
 (a) allantoin in an amount of about 9.0%;   (b) an emulsifier system including beeswax and an anionic emulsifier that is substantially hydrophilic and is soluble in water;   (c) an emollient component comprising one or more of lanolin oil, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cod liver oil, and butylated hydroxytoluene;   (d) an acid to adjust the pH of the composition to a value from about 3.0 to about 6.0;   (e) water in an amount from about 50% to about 90% of the composition;   (f) propylene glycol in an amount from about 2.0% to about 9.0% of the composition;   (g) tetrasodium EDTA in an amount from about 0.05% to about 0.25% of the composition;   (h) methylparaben in an amount from about 0.10% to about 0.50% of the composition; and   (i) propylparaben in an amount from about 0.10% to about 0.50% of the composition,   wherein the allantoin is stable in the composition for 6 months or 8 months at 40° C.   
     
     
         129 . The composition of  claim 128 , wherein the pH of the composition is adjusted to a value from about 4.5 to about 5.8. 
     
     
         130 . A composition consisting essentially of an oil-in-water emulsion comprising:
 (a) allantoin in an amount from about 0.5% to about. 10.0% of the composition;   (b) beeswax in an amount from about 0.50% to about 5.0% of the composition;   (c) 30% sodium lauryl sulfate in an amount from about 0.50% to about 5.0% of the composition;   (d) lanolin oil in an amount from about 5.0 to about 15.0% of the composition;   (e) cetyl alcohol in an amount from about 1.0% to about 8.0% of the composition;   (f) stearyl alcohol in an amount from about 0.50% to about 6.0% of the composition;   (g) cod liver oil in an amount from about 0.50% to about 15.0% of the composition;   (h) butylated hydroxytoluene in an amount from about 0.10% to about 3.0% of the composition:   (i) an acid to adjust the pH of the composition to a value from about 3.0 to about 6.0;   (j) water in an amount from about 50% to about 90% of the composition;   (k) propylene glycol in an amount from about 2.0% to about 9.0% of the composition;   (l) tetrasodium EDTA in an amount from about 0.05% to about 0.25% of the composition;   (m) methylparaben in an amount from about 0.10% to about 0.50% of the composition; and   (n) propylparaben in an amount from about 0.10% to about 0.50% of the composition,   wherein the allantoin is stable in the composition for 30 days, 60 days, or 90 days at 40° C.
