Abstract

The present invention provides materials and methods for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). Materials of the invention may include compositions comprising one or more tight junction antagonists and optionally one or more therapeutic agents. Methods of the invention may comprise treating a subject in need thereof with a composition comprising one or more tight junction antagonists and, optionally one or more therapeutic agents.

         1 . A method of treating inflammatory bowel disease comprising:
 administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising a tight junction antagonist.   
     
     
         2 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the antagonist is a peptide. 
     
     
         3 . A method according to  claim 2 , wherein the peptide comprises a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 1-24. 
     
     
         4 . A method according to  claim 2 , wherein the peptide comprises the sequence GGVLVQPG (SEQ ID NO:15). 
     
     
         5 . A method according to  claim 2 , wherein the peptide consists essentially of the sequence GGVLVQPG (SEQ ID NO:15). 
     
     
         6 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the composition is a delayed release composition. 
     
     
         7 . A method according to  claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a therapeutic agent. 
     
     
         8 . A method according to  claim 7 , wherein the therapeutic agent includes one or more agents selected from the group consisting of aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, antibiotics, and biologic therapeutics. 
     
     
         9 . A method according to  claim 7 , wherein the therapeutic agent comprises a steroid. 
     
     
         10 . A method of treating Crohn's disease comprising:
 administering to a subject in need thereof a composition comprising a tight junction antagonist.   
     
     
         11 . A method according to  claim 10 , wherein the antagonist is a peptide. 
     
     
         12 . A method according to  claim 11 , wherein the peptide comprises a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 1-24. 
     
     
         13 . A method according to  claim 11 , wherein the peptide comprises the sequence GGVLVQPG (SEQ ID NO:15). 
     
     
         14 . A method according to  claim 11 , wherein the peptide consists essentially of the sequence GGVLVQPG (SEQ ID NO:15). 
     
     
         15 . A method according to  claim 10 , wherein the composition is a delayed release composition. 
     
     
         16 . A method according to  claim 10 , wherein the composition comprises a therapeutic agent. 
     
     
         17 . A method according to  claim 16 , wherein the therapeutic agent includes one or more agents selected from the group consisting of aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, antibiotics, and biologic therapeutics.

         21 . A method according to  claim 20 , wherein the peptide comprises a sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 1-24.

         23 . A method according to  claim 20 , wherein the peptide consists essentially of the sequence GGVLVQPG (SEQ ID NO:15).
