Abstract

A retractor ( 101 ) for retracting the margins of a wound opening ( 103 ) comprises an inner anchoring O-ring ( 105 ) attached to a cylindrical sleeve ( 106 ) at a distal end and a reinforcing O-ring ( 109 ) attached to a proximal end of the sleeve ( 106 ). The sleeve ( 106 ) is led between an inner ring part ( 110 ) and a corresponding recess ( 116 ) in an outer ring part ( 111 ). The outer ring part ( 111 ) has anchor formations ( 120 ) over which the proximal end of the sleeve ( 106 ) is attached to anchor the sleeve ( 106 ). To retract the wound opening ( 103 ) the sleeve ( 106 ) is pulled while the guide rings ( 110, 111 ) are moved against the tissue surrounding the wound opening ( 103 ). This pulls the inner O-ring ( 105 ) against the inside of the tissue adjacent the wound opening ( 103 ), and retracts the wound opening ( 103 ). The sleeve ( 106 ) is manipulated locally for maximum retraction efficiency.

29 . The medical device of claim 28 , wherein the first hub includes a radially inner surface, the second hub includes a radially outer surface, and the radially inner surface and the radially outer surface mate to rotatably couple the first hub to the second hub.

30 . The medical device of claim 29 , wherein the second hub includes a radially inner ring part, and a radially outer O-ring coupled to the radially inner ring part.

31 . The medical device of claim 29 , wherein the radially inner surface has a first profile, the radially outer surface has a second profile, and the first profile is complementary to the second profile.

32 . The medical device of claim 28 , wherein the proximal assembly has a central longitudinal axis, and the second hub rotates about the central longitudinal axis.

33 . The medical device of claim 28 , wherein the proximal assembly has a first central longitudinal axis, the access portion has a second central longitudinal axis, and the first central longitudinal axis and the second central longitudinal axis are coaxial.

34 . The medical device of claim 28 , wherein the access portion extends proximally from a central portion of the second hub.

35 . The medical device of claim 28 , wherein the access portion includes a proximal end having an opening, and a sealing portion for providing sealed access to an object inserted into the opening.

         36 . A medical device, comprising:
 a wound protector, including:
 a proximal ring,
 a distal ring, and
a wound-engaging sleeve extending between the proximal ring and the distal ring; and
   a proximal assembly, including:
 a first hub,
 a second hub, and
an access portion providing access through the proximal assembly into the wound protector, wherein the first hub is coupled to the proximal ring, the second hub engages the first hub, and the second hub is sized relative to the first hub for rotation of the second hub relative to the first hub.

37 . The medical device of claim 36 , wherein the second hub includes a radially inner ring part, and a radially outer O-ring coupled to the radially inner ring part, and wherein the first hub includes a radially outer ring part that engages the radially outer O-ring.

38 . The medical device of claim 36 , wherein the first hub includes a radially inner surface, the second hub includes a radially outer surface, and the radially inner surface and the radially outer surface mate.

39 . The medical device of claim 38 , wherein the radially inner surface has a first width, the radially outer surface has a second width, and the second width differs from the first width such that the radially inner surface is slidable relative to the radially outer surface.

40 . The medical device of claim 36 , wherein the first hub includes a first engagement portion, the second hub includes a second engagement portion, one of the first engagement portion and the second engagement portion includes a protrusion, and the other of the first engagement portion and the second engagement portion includes a recess that receives the protrusion.

41 . The medical device of claim 36 , wherein the proximal assembly has a central longitudinal axis, and the second hub rotates about the central longitudinal axis.
