Abstract
A prosthetic intervertebral disc and methods for using the same are provided. The subject prosthetic discs are characterized by including top and bottom endplates separated by a fibrous compressible element that includes an annular region and a nuclear region. The two plates are held together at least one fiber wound around at least one region of the top endplate and at least one region of the bottom endplate. The subject discs may he employed with separate vertebral body fixation elements, or they may include integrated vertebral body fixation elements. Also provided are kits and systems that include the subject prosthetic discs.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A prosthetic intervertebral disc, comprising:
a polymeric component; a first plate with a first plurality of slots; a second plate with a second plurality of slots; and a fibrous component passing through the first plurality of slots and the second plurality of slots such that the first plate is held to the second plate, wherein the fibrous component is wound obliquely between the first plurality of slots and the second plurality of slots a plurality of times to form a number of layers of fiber, and wherein the fibrous component and the polymeric component are distinct, and wherein the polymeric component is located between the first and second plates.
2 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 wherein the fibrous component forms a pattern further having a horizontal portion with respect to the first and second plates.
3 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of slots has a width, a length greater than the width, and a depth, and each of the second plurality of slots has a width, a length greater than the width, and a depth, and
wherein the fibrous component passes through each of the first plurality of slots along the depth of each of the first plurality of slots, and passes through each of the second plurality of slots along the depth of each of the second plurality of slots.
4 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of slots has a width, a length greater than the width, and a depth, and each of the second plurality of slots has a width, a length greater than the width, and a depth, and
wherein the fibrous component passes through the first plurality of slots along the depth of each of the first plurality of slots, and passes through the second plurality of slots along the depth of each of the second plurality of slots.
5 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous component passes between the first plate and the second plate in a crossing pattern.
6 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the first plate has a first side, adjacent to the polymeric component, and a second side opposite to the first side, the first plurality of slots extending through the first plate from the first side to the second side, and
wherein the second plate has a first side, adjacent to the polymeric component, and a second side opposite to the first side, the second plurality of slots extending through the second plate from the first side to the second side.
7 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second plates has at least one region around which the fibrous component passes to hold the plates together.
8 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the first and second plates each have a plurality of regions around which the fibrous component passes to hold the plates together.
9 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric component is located in a first area in the center of the disc and the fibrous component is located in a second area around the first area.
10 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous component comprises at least one fiber.
11 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , further comprising:
a first fixation element adapted to fix the first plate to a vertebral body adjacent to the first plate, the first fixation element extending in a direction away from the polymeric component; and a second fixation element adapted to fix the second plate to a vertebral body adjacent to the second plate, the second fixation element extending in a direction away from the polymeric component.
12 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the disc exhibits stiffness in a vertical direction.
13 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the disc exhibits torsional stiffness.
14 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the disc exhibits bending stiffness in a sagittal plane.
15 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the disc exhibits bending stiffness in a frontal plane.
16 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the disc exhibits stiffness in a vertical direction, torsional stiffness, bending stiffness in a sagittal plane, and bending stiffness in a frontal plane.
17 . The prosthetic intervertebral disc of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric component is elastomeric.Cited by (0)
