         or a salt thereof wherein, 
         R 1  is —COOR 2 , —CH 2 —OH, or —CH 2 —OC(═O)R 3 ; 
         R 2  is a metal cation, a C 1 -C 6  alkyl optionally substituted with 1-3 phenyls or substituted phenyls, or with a hydroxy, —NHCOCH 3 , or an amino group, where the substituted phenyl is substituted with 1-3, C 1 -C 6  alkyl and/or C 1 -C 6  alkoxy group, or R 2  is hydrogen; 
         R 3  is an asymmetric hydrocarbyl group; 
         R 4  is C 1 -C 6  alkyl provided that when R 2  is methyl, benzyl, or a metal cation, R 4  excludes methyl; C 1 -C 6  alkyl substituted with 1-3, halo, C 1 -C 6  alkoxy, phenyl, or substituted phenyl, where the substituted phenyl is substituted with 1-3, C 1 -C 6  alkyl and/or C 1 -C 6  alkoxy group; or R 4  is another hydroxyl protecting group.
