Techniques for group messaging on a mobile computing device
Abstract
Techniques for group messaging on a mobile computing device are described. An apparatus may comprise a message server to communicate messages between multiple mobile computing devices. The message server may have a group message management module to establish a group messaging session between the multiple mobile computing devices. The group message management module may have a group generating module to receive a message with a group message indicator and identifying information for multiple mobile computing devices within the message. The group generating module may form a message group to communicate messages from any one of the mobile computing devices to all of the mobile computing devices for the group messaging session. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

receiving, by a group message management module having a group generating module and a group control module, a message; forming, by the group generating module, a message group of a plurality of mobile computing devices to communicate the received message to all mobile computing devices of the message group in response to receiving the message; initiating, by the group generating module, a group messaging session between the plurality of mobile computing devices of the message group in accordance with one or more message policy rules based on information identified in association with the received message in response to receiving the message, wherein the group messaging session allows any of the plurality of mobile computing devices of the message group to communicate a message to all other mobile computing devices of the message group; and forwarding, by the group control module, any other messages received from mobile computing devices of the message group to other mobile computing devices of the message group.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more message policy rules controls initiation of the group messaging session when the information identified in association with the received message comprises information that one or more operators of the plurality of mobile computing devices are under a certain age threshold.
13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more message policy rules controls initiation of the group messaging session when the information identified in association with the received message comprises information that a certain source address or a certain destination address are present within the received message.
14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more message policy rules controls initiation of the group messaging session when the information identified in association with the received message comprises information that the received message includes identifying information for a certain threshold number of mobile computing devices.
15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the received message does not include a group message indicator and the group messaging management module initiates the group messaging session in response to the received message under control of the one or more message policy rules without further direction by a sender of the received message.
16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the group messaging management module is implemented by a mobile computing device of the plurality of mobile computing devices of the message group.
17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the group messaging management module is implemented by a message server operable to communicate messages between the mobile computing devices of the plurality of mobile computing devices.
18 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:
storing, by the group control module, messages for the group messaging session in a message storage queue.
19 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising:
sending, by the group control module, archived messages stored by the message storage queue for the message group to a mobile computing device within the message group.
20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the message group of a plurality of mobile computing devices is formed without the plurality of mobile computing devices registering with the group message management module.
21 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, enable a computing system to:
receive, by a group message management module having a group generating module and a group control module, a message; form, by the group generating module, a message group of a plurality of mobile computing devices to communicate the received message to all mobile computing devices of the message group in response to receiving the message; initiate, by the group generating module, a group messaging session between the plurality of mobile computing devices of the message group in accordance with one or more message policy rules based on information identified in association with the received message in response to receiving the message, wherein the group messaging session allows any of the plurality of mobile computing devices of the message group to communicate a message to all other mobile computing devices of the message group; and forward, by the group control module, any other messages received from mobile computing devices of the message group to other mobile computing devices of the message group.
