Abstract
Disclosed herein is a composition comprising of resveratrol and/or derivatives thereof and/or functionally related compounds and benzoyl peroxide and/or derivatives thereof and/or functionally related compounds for the treatment of acne and other inflammatory or infectious skin disorders. Also disclosed are methods of treating acne and other inflammatory and infectious skin disorders using the compositions described herein.

A topical formulation for the treatment, improvement in the appearance of, or prevention of acne vulgaris comprising an effective amount of resveratrol and/or derivative(s) thereof and/or functionally related compound(s) in combination with an effective amount of benzoyl peroxide and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s).
2 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 comprising trans-3,4′,5 trihydroxystilbene (trans-resveratrol) and benzoyl peroxide.
3 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 comprising trans-resveratrol and benzoyl peroxide and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s).
4 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is cis-3,4′,5-trihydroxystilbene.
5 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is 3,4-dihydroxy-4′methoxystilbene.
6 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is 3,5-dimethoxy-4′-hydroxystilbene.
7 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is 3,4′5-trimethoxystilbene.
8 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is α,β-dihydro-3,4′,5-trihydroxystilbene.
9 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is cis-piceid.
10 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is trans-piceid, pterostilbene.
11 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is epsilon-viniferin.
12 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is alpha-viniferin.
13 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is delta-viniferin.
14 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is resveratrol dimer.
15 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is 5,4′-dihydroxy-3-O-methoxystilbene.
16 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is 3,4-dihydroxy-4′-O-methoxystilbene.
17 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is resveratroloside.

The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol derivative is a derivative that arises from substituting different functional R groups, wherein R is hydrogen, methyl, C 1-6 alkyl, hydroxy, or C 1-6 alkoxy, at one or more various positions around the central core benzene rings.
19 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein the resveratrol functionally related compound is an antioxidant.
20 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
21 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is α-tocopherol (Vitamin E).
22 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is a polyphenol.
23 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is lipoic acid.
24 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is glutathione.
25 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is uric acid.
26 . The topical formulation according to claim 19 wherein the antioxidant is a carotene.

35 . The topical formulation according to claim 34 wherein topical acids are selected from azelaic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid.
36 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein benzoyl peroxide functionally related compounds include oral acne medications.
37 . The topical formulation according to claim 36 wherein oral acne medications include oral antibiotics (tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline or derivative compounds).
38 . The topical formulation according to claim 36 wherein oral acne medication includes spironolactone.
39 . The topical formulation according to claim 36 where the oral acne medication includes isotretinoin.
40 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein benzoyl peroxide functionally related compounds include topical antibiotics.
41 . The topical formulation according to claim 40 wherein topical antibiotics include clindamycin, erythromycin, sulfacetamide sodium/sulfur, silver sulfadiazine, neomycin, polymyxin B, bacitracin, mupirocin, and retapamulin.
42 . The topical formulation according to claim 1 wherein benzoyl peroxide functionally related compounds include topical antifungals.
43 . The topical formulation according to claim 42 wherein topical antifungals arc selected from ketoconazole, miconazole, fluconazole, clotrimazole, undeclyenic acid, sertaconazole, terbinifine, butenafine, clioquinol, haloprogin, nystatin, naftitine, tolnaftate, ciclopirox, amphotericin B, and tea tree oil.
44 . The topical formulation of claim 1 , further comprising a solubilizer wherein the solubilizer comprises a water miscible organic compound.
45 . The topical formulation of claim 1 , further comprising a solubilizer phase consisting essentially of one or more surfactants.
46 . The topical formulation of claim 1 further comprising a suspending agent, wherein said suspending agent is selected from the group consisting of olive oil, shea butter, coco butter, vegetable oil and combinations thereof.

The topical formulation of claim 1 further comprising a non-ionic surfactant, wherein said non-ionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of oleyl alcohol, lanolin alcohol, acetylated lanolin alcohol, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, ceostearyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, polyoxyethylene glycol (PEG), polypropylene glycol, glucoside alkyl ethers, triton X-100, glycerol alkyl esters, sorbitan and the like.
48 . The topical formulation of claim 1 further comprising a preservative tinosan, potassium sorbate, grapefruit seed extract, and the class of paraben compounds (e.g. methylparaben, propylparaben) or any combination thereof.
49 . The topical formulation of claim 1 further comprising an emulsifier, wherein said emulsifier is selected from the group stearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, steareth-20, Irish moss and the like.
50 . The topical formulation of claim 1 further comprising an emollient, wherein said emollient is selected from the group candellilla wax, sweet almond oil, apricot oil, emu oil, argan oil, glycerin, coconut oil, grape seed oil, honey, lanolin and the like.
51 . The topical formulation of claim 1 further comprising a fragrance, wherein said fragrance is selected from essential oils and the like.
52 . The topical formulation of claim 1 wherein resveratrol and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s) comprise a concentration of 0.00005-75% of the formulation.
53 . The topical formulation of claim 1 wherein resveratrol and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s) comprise a concentration of 0.05-20% of the formulation.
54 . The topical formulation of claim 1 wherein resveratrol and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s) comprise a concentration of 0.05-10% of the formulation.
55 . The topical formulation of claim 1 wherein resveratrol and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s) comprise a concentration of 0.05-5% of the formulation.
56 . The topical formulation of claim 1 wherein resveratrol and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s) comprise a concentration of 0.1-5% of the formulation.

65 . A method of treating acne which comprises topically administering to the affected areas including but not limited to face, back, chest, arms, neck, buttocks the topical formulation described in claim 1 .
66 . The method of claim 65 wherein the topical formulation is administered to the human patient as a single dose.
67 . The method of claim 65 wherein the topical formulation is administered to the human patient in two doses, three doses, four doses or five doses daily with an interval between applications ranging from 3-12 hours.
68 . The method of claim 65 wherein the topical formulation is administered to the patient and remains on the skin for a period ranging from 30 seconds to 24 hours.
69 . The method of claim 65 wherein the topical formulation is administered to the patient and remains on the skin for a period ranging from 1 second to 5 minutes.
70 . The method of claim 65 wherein the topical formulation is administered to the patient and remains on the skin for a period ranging from 1 seconds to 1 minute.
71 . A method of making a topical formulation for the treatment, improvement of the appearance of, or prevention of acne comprising
a. Preparing first a solution by dissolving an effective amount of a mixture of active ingredients as denoted in claim 1 in a solubilizer phase and b. Adding to the first solution a second solution comprising at least one of the suspending agents, a preservative, a non-ionic surfactant, a humectant, a fragrance, and emulsifier and any combination thereof.
72 . The method of claim 71 wherein the solubilizer phase consists essentially of one or more surfactants.
73 . A topical formulation according to any one of claims 1 - 64 for use in the treatment, improvement in the appearance of, or prevention of inflammatory skin disorders.
74 . The topical formulation according to claim 73 , wherein the inflammatory skin disorder is selected from seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, pseudofolliculitis barbae.
75 . A topical formulation according to any one of claims 1 - 64 for use in the treatment, improvement in the appearance of, or prevention of an infectious skin disorder.
76 . The topical formulation according to claim 75 , wherein the infectious skin disorder is selected from folliculitis, impetigo, tinea, candidiasis, and onychomycosis.
77 . An oral formulation for the treatment, improvement in the appearance of, or prevention of acne vulgaris comprising an effective amount of resveratrol and/or derivative(s) thereof and/or functionally related compound(s) in combination with an effective amount of benzoyl peroxide and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compound(s).
78 . The oral formulation according to claim 77 where the active ingredient include trans-resveratrol and/or its derivative(s) and/or functionally related compounds according to claims 2 - 29 and an oral antiacne medications.
79 . The oral formulation according to claim 78 where the oral antiacne medication is an oral antibiotic selected from oral doxycycline, oral tetracycline, oral minocycline.
80 . The oral formulation according to claim 78 wherein the oral antiacne medication is spironolactone.
