Abstract

One aspect of the invention provides a method of inhibiting, protecting against, or treating UVR-induced skin damage in a mammal at risk of developing UVR-induced skin damage. The method includes the step of topically administering a pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition including an effective amount of a Syk kinase inhibitor to said mammal. The Syk kinase inhibitor inhibits the UVR-induced skin damage in the mammal. Another aspect of the invention provides a method of treating a disease or disorder associated with a change of Syk kinase expression in the skin in a mammal. The method includes the step of topically administering to said skin of said mammal a pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition including a therapeutically effective amount of at least one Syk kinase inhibitor, thereby reducing Syk kinase expression in the skin of the mammal and treating the disease or disorder.

A method of inhibiting, protecting against, or treating UVR-induced skin damage in a mammal at risk of developing UVR-induced skin damage, said method comprising the step of topically administering a pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition comprising an effective amount of a Syk kinase inhibitor to said mammal, wherein said Syk kinase inhibitor inhibits said UVR-induced skin damage in said mammal. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said mammal is selected from the group consisting of a mouse, rat, non-human primate, and human. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said mammal is a human. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said Syk kinase inhibitor is piceatannol or a salt thereof. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein said piceatannol or salt thereof is incorporated within a dermally-acting composition that further comprises a delivery vehicle. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein said delivery vehicle comprises a lipid component. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein said delivery vehicle comprises a liposome. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said Syk kinase inhibitor comprises an inhibitor selected from the group consisting of antibody, intrabody, siRNA, ribozyme, antisense, aptamer, peptidomimetic, small molecule, vitamin, and any combination thereof. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein said vitamin is selected from the group consisting of vitamin A, Vitamin C, and vitamin E. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition further comprises sunscreen. 
     
     
         11 . A method of reducing the level of Syk kinase in the skin of a mammal, said method comprising the step of contacting said skin of said mammal with a dermally-acting composition, said composition comprising a delivery vehicle and an effective amount of a Syk kinase inhibitor, thereby reducing the level of said Syk kinase in said skin of said mammal. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein said delivery vehicle comprises a lipid component. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein said delivery vehicle comprises a liposome. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the mammal at risk of developing UVR-induced skin damage was diagnosed as such through detection of an elevated level of Syk kinase. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition is selected from the group consisting of: a liniment, a lotion, an emulsion, a cream, an ointment, a paste, and a gel. 
     
     
         16 . A method of treating a disease or disorder associated with a change of Syk kinase expression in the skin in a mammal, said method comprising the step of topically administering to said skin of said mammal a pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of at least one Syk kinase inhibitor, thereby reducing Syk kinase expression in said skin of said mammal and treating said disease or disorder. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein said Syk kinase inhibitor is piceatannol or a salt thereof. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein said disease or disorder is selected from the group consisting of UVR-induced skin damage, UVR-induced photoaging, and UVR-induced photocarginogenesis. 
     
     
         19 . A kit comprising a Syk kinase inhibitor and instructional material for the topical administration thereof. 
     
     
         20 . The kit of  claim 19 , wherein said Syk kinase inhibitor s piceatannol or a salt thereof.
