Abstract

Disclosed herein is {[5-(3-fluorophenyl)-3-hydroxypyridine-2-carbonyl]-amino} acetic acid and the ester and amide prodrugs thereof, that can stabilize hypoxia inducible factor-2 alpha (HIF-2α) and thereby provide a method for treating cancer. Further disclosed are compositions which comprise {[5-(3-fluorophenyl)-3-hydroxypyridine-2-carbonyl]-amino} acetic acid and/or a prodrug thereof which can be used to treat cancer.

         5 . A method for decreasing tumor angiogenesis in a subject having cancer, comprising administering to a subject an effective amount of a compound of the formula:

A method for decreasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in a cell in vitro, in vivo or ex vivo, comprising administering to the cell an effective amount of a compound of the formula:

A method for increasing soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (sVEGF-1) in a cell in vitro, in vivo or ex vivo, comprising administering to the cell an effective amount of a compound of the formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 
       
     
     
         11 . The method according to  claim 10 , wherein the cell is a cancer cell. 
     
     
         12 . A method for controlling tumor growth in a subject, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a compound of the formula: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 
       
     
     
         13 . A composition for treating cancer, comprising:
 a) an effective amount of a compound of the formula:   
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         
           or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and 
         
         b) one or more chemotherapeutic agents. 
       
     
     
         14 . The composition according to  claim 13 , wherein the chemotherapeutic agent is selected from taxol, IL-2, gemcitabine, erlotinib, doxil, irinortecan, and bevacizumab.
