Abstract

Methods for modifying components include disposing a ceramic material on an exterior surface of the component, wherein the component comprises a nickel-based or cobalt-based superalloy, and applying a local laser application to at least a portion of the ceramic material to bond it to the component.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A method for modifying a component, the method comprising:
disposing a ceramic material on an exterior surface of the component, wherein the component comprises a nickel-based or cobalt-based superalloy; and, applying a local laser application to at least a portion of the ceramic material to bond it to the component.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic material comprises yttria stabilized zirconia.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic material comprises a sprayable ceramic material, and wherein disposing the sprayable ceramic material on the exterior surface of the component comprises spraying the sprayable ceramic material onto the exterior surface of the component.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ceramic material comprises a photo-reactant material.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the photo-reactant material reacts with a wavelength of the local laser application.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing a non-lasered portion of the ceramic material from the component.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein removing the non-lasered portion of the ceramic material from the component occurs via rinsing the component.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the component comprises a turbine component.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises utilizing the turbine component in operation of a turbine.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the turbine component comprises a turbine blade.

11 . A method for modifying a component, the method comprising:
disposing a ceramic material on an exterior surface of the component at least partially adjacent a pre-existing coating, wherein the component comprises a nickel-based or cobalt-based superalloy; and, applying a local laser application to at least a portion of the ceramic material to bond it to the component.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the ceramic material comprises yttria stabilized zirconia.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the ceramic material comprises a sprayable ceramic material, and wherein disposing the sprayable ceramic material on the exterior surface of the component comprises spraying the sprayable ceramic material onto the exterior surface of the component.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the ceramic material comprises a photo-reactant material.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the photo-reactant material reacts with a wavelength of the local laser application.

         16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the pre-existing coating comprises a pre-existing ceramic coating.

         17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the pre-existing ceramic coating comprises pre-existing yttria-stabilized zirconia.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the component comprises a turbine component.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the method further comprises utilizing the turbine component in operation of a turbine.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the turbine component comprises a turbine blade.
