Abstract
Various embodiments provide self-revealing gestures that are designed to provide an indication of how to perform one or more different gestures. In at least one embodiment, an initiation gesture is received, relative to an object. The initiation gesture is configured to cause presentation of a visualization designed to provide an indication of how to perform a different gesture. Responsive to receiving the initiation gesture, the visualization is presented without causing performance of an operation associated with the different gesture.

2 . A computer comprising:
a processor; a computer-readable medium coupled to the processor, the computer-readable medium including computer-executable instructions to configure the computer to perform operations comprising:
displaying an object on a display device associated with the computer;
identifying an initiation gesture related to the object via an input received at the computer;
responsive to the identifying, causing presentation on the display device of a visualization associated with an indication of how to perform an input gesture associated with the at least one object without causing performance of an operation associated with the input gesture;
detecting a release of the initiation gesture;
responsive to detecting the release of the initiation gesture, causing the visualization to end.
3 . The computer of claim 2 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further configure the computer to identify the initiation gesture to enter a teaching mode.
4 . The computer of claim 2 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further configure the computer to identify the initiation gesture as different than the input gesture.
5 . The computer of claim 2 , wherein the visualization includes an animation.
6 . The computer of claim 5 , wherein the animation includes one or more of the object wiggling, the object moving in a direction, or a representation of a finger or hand accomplishing the input gesture.
7 . The computer of claim 5 , wherein:
the animation includes the object moving in a direction, the initiation gesture includes a movement of the object in the direction, and the operations further comprise: detecting that the movement of the initiation gesture along the direction has surpassed a threshold distance; and responsive to detecting that the movement of the initiation gesture has surpassed the threshold distance, causing the visualization to end and performing the operation associated with the input gesture.
8 . A computer-implemented method comprising:
presenting an object on a display device; receiving an initiation gesture related to the object via an input device; based at least in part on the initiation gesture, determining to enter a teaching mode; based at least in part on the determination to enter the teaching mode, displaying on the display device a visualization of an input gesture that accomplishes an operation on the object; detecting a change to the initiation gesture; and based at least in part on the detection of the change, determining to exit the teaching mode.
9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the initiation gesture includes a press and hold gesture and the change to the initiation gesture includes a dragging gesture.
10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the initiation gesture includes a press and hold gesture and the change to the initiation gesture includes a release of the press and hold gesture.
11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the change to the initiation gesture includes one or more of a release of the initiation gesture, a change in movement of the initiation gesture, or addition or subtraction of detected fingers of the initiation gesture.
12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 8 further comprising:
based at least in part on the determination to exit the teaching mode, ceasing to present the visualization without causing performance of the operation associated with the input gesture.
13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the determination to exit the teaching mode is based at least in part on determining that the change is inconsistent with behavior associated with the input gesture
14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 8 further comprising:
based at least in part on the determination to exit the teaching mode:
ceasing to present the visualization; and
performing the operation associated with the input gesture.
15 . A system comprising:
a processor; a display; a computer-readable medium coupled to the processor, the computer-readable medium including computer-executable instructions to configure the system to perform operations comprising:
presenting an object via the display;
receiving an initiation gesture corresponding to the object, the input being associated with an input gesture;
responsive to receiving the initiation gesture, entering a teaching mode by displaying a visualization that indicates how to perform an input gesture, wherein:
the input gesture is associated with an operation related to the object, and
the operation is not accomplished during the teaching mode;
detecting a change to the initiation gesture; and
responsive to the change to the initiation gesture, determining to exit the teaching mode.
16 . The system of claim 15 further comprising:
responsive to the determination to exit the teaching mode and based at least in part on the change to the initiation gesture, ceasing to display he visualization.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the change includes one or more of:
detecting a cessation of the initiation gesture, or receiving an input that is inconsistent with the input gesture.
18 . The system of claim 15 further comprising:
responsive to the determination to exit the teaching mode and based at least in part on the change to the initiation gesture:
ceasing to display he visualization, and
performing the operation.
19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the change includes receiving an input that is consistent with the input gesture.
20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein detecting the change includes detecting continuation of the initiation gesture.
21 . The system of claim 15 , wherein displaying the visualization includes one or more of:
