What is claimed is:

         1 . A garment, comprising:
 a pair of sleeves; a body portion; and a hood extending from the body portion, wherein the hood comprises a multi-layered sidewall, the multi-layered sidewall comprising:
 an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a first pocket;
 a padding layer comprising a rate dependent material and positioned within the first pocket; and
 a multi-layered forehead wall coupled to the multi-layered sidewall, wherein a hem extends along an opening in the hood defined by a first portion of an of the multi-layered sidewall, an edge of the multi-layered forehead wall, and a second portion of the edge of the multi-layered sidewall, wherein the hem defines a conduit and a drawstring is positioned within the conduit, the multi-layered forehead wall comprising:
 an inner forehead wall fabric layer and an outer forehead wall fabric layer, wherein the inner forehead wall fabric layer and the outer forehead wall fabric layer are seamed to define a second pocket between the hem and the seam, wherein the second pocket is separate from the first pocket; and
 a forehead wall padding layer comprising a rate dependent material and positioned within the second pocket, wherein the forehead wall padding layer is separate from the padding layer.

         2 . The garment of claim 1 , wherein the edge of the multi-layered sidewall is substantially straight.

         3 . The garment of claim 2 , wherein the drawstring is positioned proximate to a portion of the forehead wall padding layer and a portion of the padding layer.

         4 . The garment of claim 1 , wherein the multi-layered sidewall and the forehead wall collectively define at least part of a front-facing opening of the hood.

         5 . The garment of claim 1 , wherein the hood comprises a plurality of multi-layered sidewalls.

         6 . The garment of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of multi-layered sidewalls comprises an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a first pocket, and a padding layer comprising a rate dependent material and positioned within the first pocket.

         7 . The garment of claim 1 , wherein the garment is selected from the group consisting of a sweatshirt and a coat.

         8 . The garment of claim 7 , further comprising a zipper coupled the body portion.

         9 . A garment, comprising:
 a pair of sleeves;   a body portion; and   a hood extending from the body portion and defining a front-facing opening, wherein the hood comprises a plurality of pockets, wherein a padding layer comprising a rate dependent material is positioned within each of the plurality of pockets, wherein the hood further comprises a multi-layered sidewall, the multi-layered sidewall comprising an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define the plurality of pockets;
 wherein a first pocket of the plurality of pockets spans a rear curvature of the hood and a second pocket is positioned to downwardly extend from the first pocket to define a portion of the front-facing opening, wherein the first pocket is separate from the second pocket.

         10 . The garment of claim 9 , wherein the hood comprises a hem extending along a perimeter of the front-face opening.

         11 . The garment of claim 10 , wherein the hem defines a conduit and a drawstring is positioned within the conduit.

         12 . The garment of claim 11 wherein the padding layer that is positioned within the first pocket is separate and disconnected from the padding layer that is positioned within the second pocket.

         13 . The garment of claim 11 wherein at least one of the plurality of padding layers is semi-rigid.

         14 . The garment of claim 13 wherein at least one of the plurality of padding comprises closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam.

         15 . A garment hood, comprising:
 a multi-layered sidewall, the multi-layered sidewall comprising:
 an inner fabric layer and an outer fabric layer, the inner fabric layer and the outer fabric layer cooperating to define a first pocket;
 a padding layer comprising a rate dependent material and non-removably positioned within the first pocket; and
 a multi-layered forehead wall coupled to the multi-layered sidewall, the multi-layered forehead wall comprising:
 an inner forehead wall fabric layer and an outer forehead wall fabric layer, wherein the inner forehead wall fabric layer and the outer forehead wall fabric layer are seamed to define a second pocket, wherein the second pocket is separate from the first pocket; and
 a forehead wall padding layer comprising a rate dependent material and non-removably positioned within the second pocket, wherein the forehead wall padding layer is separate from the padding layer.

         16 . The garment hood of claim 15 , further comprising a tightening feature.
