Abstract

Disclosed are the use of fluorine substituted olefins, including tetra- and penta-fluoropropenes, in a variety of applications, including in methods of depositing catalyst on a solid support, methods of sterilizing articles, cleaning methods and compositions, methods of applying medicaments, fire extinguishing/suppression compositions and methods, flavor formulations, fragrance formulations and inflating agents.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of depositing catalyst on a solid support comprising precipitating particles of said catalyst from a compound of formula I in a supercritical or near supercritical state:
   XCF z R 3-z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.   
     
     
         56 . The method of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is a compound of Formula II: 
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         where 
         each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H 
         R′ is (CR2)nY, 
         Y is CRF2 
         and n is 0 or 1. 
       
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1  wherein Y is CF3. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2  wherein at least one R on the unsaturated terminal carbon is H. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3  wherein n is 0. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1  wherein n is 0. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1  wherein Y is CF3 and n is 0. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene comprises at least one tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234). 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 7  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene further comprises at least one pentafluoropropene (HFO-1225). 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 7  wherein said at least one tetrafluoropropene comprises 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze). 
     
     
         10 . A cleaning composition comprising at least one fluoroalkene of Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.   
     
     
         11 . The cleaning composition of  claim 10  having a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of not greater than about 1000. 
     
     
         12 . The cleaning composition of  claim 10  in the form of an aerosol. 
     
     
         13 . A method of applying a medicament to an organism comprising: providing a composition comprising the medicament and at least one fluoroalkene in accordance with Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   
       where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3; and introducing said composition to the organism. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13  wherein said organism is a human. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 13  wherein said introducing step comprises providing said composition to a metered dose inhaler (MDI) and discharging the composition from said MDI. 
     
     
         16 . A method of sterilizing an article comprising contacting said article with a composition comprising at least one fluoroalkene in accordance with Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.   
     
     
         17 . A fire extinguishing/suppression method comprising contacting a fire with a composition comprising at least one fluoroalkene in accordance with Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.   
     
     
         18 . A flavor formulation comprising a composition comprising at least one fluoroalkene in accordance with Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.   
     
     
         19 . A fragrance formulation comprising a composition comprising at least one fluoroalkene in accordance with Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.   
     
     
         20 . An inflating agent comprising a composition comprising at least one fluoroalkene in accordance with Formula I:
   XCF z R3- z   (I)
   where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.
